Great job, Brian! Really nice playing. You’re so relaxed you look like a natural band member.

excellent playing @Iva_Kejzlarova :astonished:

the low mids are key for this kind of tone, you could try cutting the low end and boosting the low mids. also playing on a bridge pickup may help to get that “focused” and precise tone.

nice choice of a classic song, nice playing and a very nice tone as usual from this good’ol P ! I found that some notes sounded a bit lower in volume than the average bass line level. did you use a compressor on this one ?

Thanks Laurent @terb , no compression just the normal way i record straight into DAI.
I am thinking it might be that the strings are getting a little tired, but i am loving the tone.
I might swap them out and see how it goes :sunglasses:

Pickup choice there is solid too - good humbucker style rich low-mids-saturated tone.

Very nice looking bass there, @Iva_Kejzlarova. Is it a Ken Smith?

Sounding great Brian @TNKA36

You are always so relaxed!!!

My only comment would be that it’s time start using a compressor to even out the volume, as @terb mentions. I don’t record without one in my DAW any longer (sometimes even two). @JerryP can now attest to their ease and usefulness in this application. They just make you sound better. I had this same problem of notes dropping out. And on songs like this when the bass is heard well in the mix they are essential.

This video helped me a lot

Here are the two compressors I use in my DAW

This one first
https://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/CLA76--waves-cla-76-compressor-limiter-plug-in

And then this one after it if needed (splits the load a bit)

https://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/CLA2A--waves-cla-2a-plug-in

These are a combo widely used in studios for years.
I think I might have paid $20 each but can’t remember.
You can check the Waves website and Plugin Boutique for a lower price maybe.

I think I’ll make a post about this in the plugin topic.

Thanks John, @John_E , I will have a look to see if my B 1 4 x has a compressor in it🤔
Or see if I can get hold of one of those you have mentioned :+1:
Cheers Brian

On this, I have to 1000% agree with @Howard on recording without compression then using a plug-in. Much easier to dial in this way.

IMO pedal compressors are for live playing only.
I’ve spent enough time fiddling with the Hyper Luminal to know this.

Yep, a B1 Four has a compressor.

Thinking more about this burpy sound, I’ve got this Harley Benton double humbuckers bass that I bought for a project but went another way with it.

What I don’t have is a bass with excellent dual humbuckers (EBMM aside).

So question is, as I don’t know this area, what humbuckers pickup options should I be looking at that are good for this style of tone. Preamp options? I like the idea of a “burpy” bass mod project, and a refinish to go with it.

Good question. I have mostly just rolled with my stock pickups for humbuckers on bass. I do like the sound of the Aguilars on the SR2400.

Your gretsch should be dual humbuckers… bias the neck pup a bit, put it through your B7K with its tone wide open and the B7K pumping the low mids a bit?

honestly I don’t like much humbuckers, and I don’t like much those burpy tones neither. so I’m not the best to give advices about those questions  sorry

Correct. The overall tone is different though. I’ll give it a shot.

Just thought it’s something I don’t really have so should start exploring.

Anyone else know this area?

These seem to be the front runner.

I’ve not tried those. I have done soapbars by Delano, EMG, and Seymour Duncan, but not those. The SSBs

Seymour Duncan makes an EQ that scoops the mids with a pull knob to make it slap better. I know it pairs with the SSBs. Will lookup the model after work, that’s a possibility for EQ

The scoop works in conjunction with the EQ pots, so you can really go to town on it

I want to boost low mids but can do that on the B7K.

Ah, SSBs look like the passive cousins of these active ones. I’ll investigate both. I’ve got room/battery for a preamp as well

OMG @Iva_Kejzlarova ! Outstanding cover and as @howard said , well above my skill level

You just keep em coming @TNKA36 . Great cover, great timing and I’m struggling to decide if you or @JerryP are the most chilled when playing
