Yessss Motörhead! That’s awesome @Ed !
Oh @Ed that was absolutely MINT! I had a pirated tape copy of Ace of Spades (sorry Lemmy) paired with a knock off Sony Walkman for all my teenage years.
You have surpassed anything you’ve done previously with this
The Rick sounded absolutely superb, so well dialled in !
Great job @Ed
Thanks John. I usually run two channels, one mic’d and one DI, then I split them about 50% each side. The left side is much more trebley. I’m still experimenting with my mix. Sometimes it works, this time the settings for LR were far too different.
I’d consider abandoning the mic and going with an amp sim but whatever works for you
I will consider it. I need to play around more and see where I end up. I’ve gone from not having a clue how any of this works to getting a basic understanding of editing and mixing. Still so much to learn. When my buddy and I started jamming we would complain that we just wanted to play music not become sound engineers.
I’m often amazed at how much knowledge there is in this forum. It’s made something that was completely overwhelming seem much more doable.
Also you could mix your two signals (mic and DI) into one mono track and not pan each of them like two separate tracks. A bass track can sit right in the middle of the mix, that’s the easy point
But like @howard, I prefer an amp sim (hardware in my case, in the form of a modeling preamp, but a software amp sim works perfectly too).
Guys, guys @John_E @StartedAt48 @Barney @Mac thanks so much! I feel I may have peaked with this cover - it can only be downhill from here .
Nah - for me, Motörhead November, Mövember if you will, is only just beginning! I intend to do as much as possible to really focus in on Lemmy’s playing style in the next couple of weeks, but I’ll probably post everything on my User Video Index to avoid clogging this thread up .
Two interesting points I found so far:
-
Lemmy doesn’t actually play very fast on the records. The lines tend to be based around quarter or eighth notes - I think it’s the fast drums that give the impression of going full throttle for 3 minutes.
-
The real hero here may well be my new picks. I was originally using big fat dustbin lids (maybe 2mm?) for a kind of caveman approach, but the thinner 1.14mm picks really make it easier - especially when stumming chords!
-
Oh! and what was really helpful when recording was following the Moises-generated clicktrack
Worth its weight in gold
I think my work here is done
How did you do that?
I’ve splashed out on Moises premium - it automatically generates a clicktrack at the tempo when you split the tracks (and gives you the key and chords). Way easier than fiddling with Audacity
Really? One click in most daws. Not sure about audacity though.
Admittedly I haven’t read the manual but I usually set the click track manually in Audacity. It would be pretty cool if it’s automatic. I’ll have to check when I get back…
In most DAWs, all you need to do is set the correct song tempo. And since you need to do this anyway for the measure bars to line up correctly, it’s usually the first thing you should do, and probably the most important. It’s 100% always the first thing I do, and I don’t even use backing tracks.
Then all you need to do is click on the metronome
Some DAWs will autodetect the tempo for you from a track. I usually just look it up online though, takes like 5 seconds.
Audacity - no idea. It’s not really a DAW, it just kind of looks like one. Good free audio editor for sure, but missing a lot of stuff that DAWs have, and made with a diffferent goal in mind.
There has been some '50’s tunes here lately, so here is my contribution, nothing fancy. I hope you enjoy it.
That’s great! Aerodyne sounded awesome, and your playing was spot on. (still watching it obviously but it’s good so far )
Nice! Nothing like a good solid bit of rock n roll in the morning
I’ve never really been into Fenders but I love that Aerodyne - you probably need to wear long sleeves and gloves with that finish though .
Sweet! Still, Audacity gives me more or less everything I need for now, although it may be fun to do a production course one day and get a proper DAW …
Thank you @howard and @Ed !
The tone is the Aerodyne pots all at 100%, direct into the Scarlett 2i2, into Reaper with just the CLA-76 plugin compressor. Simple!
Fantastical @JerryP
Solid!!
Thanks John!
