well… it’s hard to take any of the New Romantics seriously
Here’s visual proof for Steven Strange and Visage being full on New Romantic as well

WTF???!
IKR? He went on to a lot of different stuff but… well just watch the video
@howard - just read more about it in Visage. I was wrong about visage … they were mf-new romantic and fit in the list
Yeah you might have been conflating them with Ultravox ( and there is good reason to).
Still, some serious talent came through Visage. Steve Strange, John McGeough, Midge Ure, Billy Currie, etc…
Nonono - of course I didn’t.
“Vienna” and “Fade to Gray” cannot be mixed up!
I guess it’s the context of Visage playing in certain clubs (named “Exile”, “Flesh Temple”, “Input”, “Rummers”, “Zwischenfall” and the like). That was always quite “dark”, while we went to other clubs (Duran Duran, Spandau Ballet etc.) for the girls (that’s where @sunDOG strolled around too, I guess ^^).
Some things might not have been like my wanna-be cool brain remembers
I was thinking more that half of Ultravox came from Visage
Agree with the overall take though. I was way way more on the post-punk/goth side, and later electroindustrial, than New Romantic.
However, the thing about Duran Duran is that they were actually quite good and some of the musicians (like John Taylor on bass) could lay down serious groove. They weren’t as much about the fashion as some of the other New Romantics. A bit poppy for me, sure, but still solid. I like their early stuff a lot.
Not too far, yet not too near. It’s Friday morn, so please don’t fear. A whole week has been too long, so I am back with another song. So check it out and please enjoy, how I create with musical toys! …………

I was too young for the actual New Romantic scene - 1980/81 - I’d have been 13’ish. I did go to a couple of the clubs that were the core of that London scene while at university (86 to 89), but by then things had moved on and all that was left were fading photographs on the walls
I remember being blown away by Johnny Cash’s cover of Depeche Mode’s Personal Jesus, when I first heard it back in 2002. The melancholy and regret in his voice is palpable.
I went to see Depeche Mode a couple of weeks ago. They ended the show with Personal Jesus - it was very good - and it’s that that inspired me for this cover. At some point, I might have a go at the original version, but I thought the JC version would be super-fun!
Cash’s recording of Personal Jesus doesn’t really have a bass part, so I echoed the main riff, plus added some root notes where they seemed appropriate. The bass has no effects on it, other than the GarageBand compressor. I also only used the neck pickup on the Dingwall.
The difficulty with this song is remembering that the second chorus is different from the first!!!
Personal Jesus - Johnny Cash
In an autotuned world, Johnny’s raw delivery strikes a visceral chord. His covers really spoke to me when I heard them. His cover of “Hurt”… damn.
This was a great performance! To me, this is exactly why I started with the B2B lessons - to be able to add to something musically vs. just playing a bunch of notes that I’ve memorized. I’m not there yet, but I hope to be.
I’d also add his version of U2’s One, another beautiful song.
This was the first song that I had to work out the structure of, bar by bar. It’s not complex, but it’s very easy to forget where you are and what comes next!
Even Trent Reznor says “Hurt” is no longer his song, it’s Cash’s. And if you know Johhny and June Carter’s history, her presence and demeanor in the video is striking too. That cover is a masterpiece, one of if not the best cover songs of all time.
I actually hadn’t heard the Personal Jesus cover. Awesome job @sunDOG - I’m a huge fan of both artists and saw DM live on that tour.
That just confirms that Reznor has gone soft and lost his grid!
It’s quite a development for the guy that wrote “happiness in slavery” to him making such statement.
Don’t understand me wrong, I like Cash’ version, but “Hurt” was the culmination of everything he stood for … and marked his dissolve into musical oblivion after the (in hindsight properly named) “the downward spiral”.
He lost his Mojo after that album and I expect a ballad with Lady Gaga or a Jazz album next
Hope? Man I always enjoy some DEF LEPPARD! Great set of covers all around today
Much appreciated, @howard
