Post Your Covers- copyright issues

So, having posted around 8 videos in the ‘Post Your Own Covers’ thread, I thought I’d ask how other people are getting on regarding YouTube copyright.
I’ve not had any major copyright strikes, but 4 of my videos are ‘blocked in certain regions’. On paper it looks like Russia, and Belarus, but I’ve had comments that others can’t watch them either.
I use backing tracks, not originals as I’d hoped that would help, but it seems hit and miss. As a test case I paid the extra for the licence for Breaking The Law, and have disputed the block. There are still another 14 days remaining on that so will see how it goes.
Have you guys and gals had any major issues when uploading your covers to YouTube?

My suspicion with Russia and Belarus is that the original artist don’t want their material shown in those two countries as a result of their aggression towards Ukraine. I have had this block in a few of my covers.

The only ones where I have had an outright strike, and the video had been taken down, are AC/DC, Highway to Hell and Brian Adams, Summer of 69. Highway was immediately blocked, while Summer got to 600 (!!) views before being taken down. I haven’t tried to cover either artists since. So far, I’ve had no other problems.

I don’t let it bother me at all. it’s not my music.

I had AC/DC blocked and appealed stating it was fair use for learning/education and my channel is not monetized. Got it unblocked in a week.

That’s good to know - was that on YouTube?

I have restricted viewing on my YT bass videos to people with the link only, as I have some professional videos on that channel too … and I don’t want to have my colleagues, vendors and customers see me playing anti-establishment punk songs or songs that promote non-bourgeois behaviour

I hope that restricting the video myself lightens the YT copyright issues too!?

Yeah, that could be the case. Thankfully I’ve not had any proper strikes, but I’m avoiding Beatles covers just in case
@Whying_Dutchman I don’t have any unlisted videos, but its a fair point, it may have an effect.
In the long run, I’ll just keep doing what I’m doing. As @Paul_9207 said, it’s not my music anyway

Not that I have seen. I keep my videos as unlisted until the HD processing has occurred at least. Before this time, the copyright check has already run and the notification is already there.

Usually it’s along the lines of “this is copyrighted, but the artist is OK with it being used on YT”

Add The Eagles to that list as well. Whomever currently holds the rights to their music is downright draconian when it comes to copyrights. They go straight for the full blown “take down the whole channel” threats.

Yes.

Copyrighted material can’t be monetized so there’s nothing to worry about. Every video I have uploaded is labeled with the Copyright tag but it doesn’t matter. You’re not going to get your videos or channel taken down.

Certain artists material simply cannot be posted on YT. The Beatles, Jimi Hendrix, among others. That’s because whoever owns the rights to that music won’t allow it.

I actually take it as a compliment when one of our covers gets a copyright flag as it means it was pretty close to the original

The quality of the sound is a bit duff - recoded on my iPhone, propped in the corner of the rehearsal studio - but this is from last night’s band practice.

The Invertants - Bad Moon Rising

The YouTube algorithm knows this ain’t no original

Well done

Yeah, when I posted me singing One More Light, there are no copyright issues. When I posted the version with the ‘original’ backing track vocals, it was restricted. I obviously butchered it enough to confuse YT

I wonder if you’re more likely to get away with it you mix the bass in much higher than in the original, as a lot of us tend to do. (what’s the point of me doing a cover if I have to strain to hear my part!!! )

FYI you can have multiple channels in your account and they don’t have a publicly visible link to each other.
