Practice routines while going through lessons

I’m starting from square one with the lessons and wondering @JoshFossgreen if there’s any recommendations on additional practices in addition to the daily lessons of the 1 month plan

Find some easy songs and start playing. :sign_of_the_horns:t2:

For learning repetition is king (not mindless repetition but focused repetition) just follow the course in manageable chunks and enjoy the ride. If you think you nail the exercises in easy, try to tackle them in medium or hard.

And if you get bored you can always start learning easy songs as Rob said.

Welcome!

You need to start playing right away.

What kind of music you listen to?

I kinda listen to a lot of stuff but definitely love rock and roll however my main goal is to play on my church’s worship band.

If you want to start training your ear early, one thing you can do is listen for intervals or phrases in the practice riffs that sound similar to a favorite song or riff, then try to find the next note or two on your own.

A simplified example: If the practice routine is just quarter notes on the open E string, you might recognize that the first three notes are the same as the main riff from “Another One Bites The Dust” (or Chic’s “Good Times”). Instead of playing the last quarter note, you can try to find where the next actual note is (another E on last 16th note of the bar), etc.

It’s a cool feeling to come out of an early lesson while also figuring out a favorite riff at the same time (within your skill level.)

Church music can be simple or complicated and you can take either approach. Rock’n’Roll is about the same. You should start as soon as you can. While I learned piano when I was young, when I started playing bass, I didn’t take any lesson, I just started playing. One song at a time. I picked the easiest song to start, so I thought, “Owner of a lonely heart”, half way through it got, well not so easy, :joy: but by that time I was already hooked so I just kept going.

The next song sounded pretty easy so I tried that too, it turned out , again it was not easy, Smooth Operator,
It was 1985 and 4 decades later I gave it another go.

Here’s one of the worship song

Say it, by Blue October. Straight chugging, nothing complicated.

Rocky Mountain Way, by Joe Walsh. Another easy one.

Hey, The Pixies. It’s in the lessons. The hardest part is the rhythm which isn’t overly so.

Dreams, by the Cranberries.

Ain’t no Sunshine, Bill Withers. Easy, I love this song.
