I’m feeling better. I haven’t tried it yet. But I will post here as soon as I have played with it for a while.
Any news on the BA-30? Inquiring minds want to know!
Mine will arrive tomorrow.
If I survive the party tonight I will post about it this weekend. Otherwise: next week!
Did it?
Did you?
Still recovering! I can party hard for two days … but recovering is a b#tch!
I forgot to post here after I tested my Joyo BA-30. I got it 2 weeks ago, when I was a little sick, and I used it a couple of times. These last weeks have been so busy, so I haven’t played as much as I normally do. And I often play very late at night, and then I prefer to use a headphone amp so I don’t make noise.
I got the white one, because the black was out of stock. The white looks very nice, but the black has the advantage that it won’t get yellowish with time. I don’t know if the white will, but it is possible.
It is surprisingly small and light. It has a lot of options to adjust volume, gain, bass, middle, compression, etc. I didn’t notice too much of a difference when changing the settings, to be honest. I mostly keep everything at 12 o’clock position, except the volume and compression, which I turn it down, and have also tried it in the maximum the compression goes, and there is some difference. I suspect bigger amps are better at this.
I didn’t test to see how loud it can go (because of the neighbours, as I live in an apartment), but it is very good for indoor practice. I also tested it with headphones, and I find the sound is even a little better than my Katana Go.
The Joyo can be connected through Bluetooth to a cell phone or other device. I connected it to my phone, and I played some songs, and I could play along with them with my bass. The volume of the music coming through the Bluetooth is adjustable on the phone. The volume button on the amp is for the bass only. It worked very well.
It is a different experience playing with an amp or headphone amp. With my headphone amp, I didn’t notice certain things. With the Joyo, I notice much more clearly if I have problems with my muting, or if my plucking is not consistent. So yes, it was a good idea to get an amp, even a small and cheap one like this.
The Joyo is very good for a small amp and I like it! I can recommend it.
At least tomorrow is Sunday and you can rest. Let us know what you think about the Joyo, when you’re feeling better.
Ok, I picked up my Joyo.
First impressions:
- heavier than I thought. So for travelling by plane this is NOT a solution. Here I will remain with my JBL Charge
- Music via USB OTG sounds much worse than with the JBL Charge. It sounds very hollow and it lacks bass, though I don’t get why. Bass should not be an issue. But it’s ok for practicing in the park, I guess.
- The bass guitar sounds fine, much better than my JBL Charge. It does not lack bass at all, like with playing music background tracks. In fact it’s better than expected, as it articulates well. It’s also louder than expected. Not good enough for a gig, of course … but good enough for jamming with an acoustic guitar player and a singer in the park. That’s a positive surprise.
- It does not feel like a toy, which is great. It’s surely a gadget that can take a beating.
Need to test a little more, especially the audio interface features.
Don’t know if I’m gonna keep it … my JBL Charge is sufficient, but the tiny latency I hear with the JBL really gets on my nerves.
More findings about the Joyo:
- it’s not possible to do a real “dry” recording. Of course you can set EQ to center and compression to minimum, but it’s not true “neutral”. For a quick & dirty recording it’s ok-ish though.
- Latency is not an issue, as the signal from the bass guitar can be heard directly (= zero latency) while the USB OTG signal has minimal latency. So for 99.99999% of the use cases it works out very well.
- I will be playing with EQ for the USB OTG background track input signal, in order to see/hear if I can get that to something acceptable. Acceptable means: it sounds as good as the JBL Charge. I see no reason why that does not work. Stay tuned for more on that.
All in all it’s a great little device, but somehow I’m still not 100% convinced.
Still need to do some more tests in terms of recording. If recording is satisfatory, the Joyo doubles as a poor man’s audio interface, so that could be great for beginners that lack $$$.
Today, I measured the Joyo with REW:
var smoothing:
1/3 smoothing:
Not the best curve to play music, and I understand now, why it sounds so terrible in music/streaming mode (but not when when playing bass guitar)
Of course, such measurement depends on many factors, but it might be a good indication for EQing yourself.
This is the EQ that REW calculated (using the Harman curve):
Filter 1: ON PK Fc 116.50 Hz Gain -2.7 dB Q 4.971
Filter 2: ON PK Fc 167.00 Hz Gain -8.8 dB Q 5.000
Filter 3: ON PK Fc 206.00 Hz Gain -5.8 dB Q 4.924
Filter 4: ON PK Fc 261.00 Hz Gain -5.8 dB Q 2.557
Filter 5: ON PK Fc 420.00 Hz Gain -7.8 dB Q 1.214
Filter 6: ON PK Fc 756.00 Hz Gain -2.4 dB Q 4.881
Filter 7: ON PK Fc 995.00 Hz Gain 6.0 dB Q 3.286
Filter 8: ON PK Fc 1539.00 Hz Gain -11.3 dB Q 1.002
Filter 9: ON PK Fc 1757.00 Hz Gain 5.9 dB Q 1.160
Filter 10: ON PK Fc 2835.00 Hz Gain -4.3 dB Q 1.006
Filter 11: ON PK Fc 3509.00 Hz Gain 6.0 dB Q 1.002
Filter 12: ON PK Fc 5328.00 Hz Gain -4.4 dB Q 1.939
You can use this directly for some EQs (like APO for Windows)
I use Tonelib Jam for playing in the park, so I have set the EQ to this, more or less.
The Joyo sounds MUCH better now. Not as good as my JBL Charge, but I don’t want to b@rf all the time. Progress!!!
I will tweak it a little in time, but whoever has the Joyo BA-30 can use this as an indication how to improve the sound of the background track (or for using the Joyo as a speaker for music etc.)
With this, the Joyo is highly recommended - I’ll keep it!
Excellent little Christmas present! Looking forward to your review.
So, OK, already. The black model is 12-15 weeks away, but Thomann has the white model in stock. Delivery in 2-3 days. Will be good for practicing. Even my Rumble Studio 40 can be too loud mornings and evenings in my apartment. And my GR Bass AT 500 combo and 112 cab? Wall shaker. I can barely bump the volume off of ‘0’ (but I do sometimes
).
For your use case I would NOT get it.
For inside, it’s better to have a small PA, like 8” or 10”, in my opinion. I can play my JBL EON 710 at really low volumes perfectly. Of course, I have measured it with REW and set it to a perfect curve, using its built-in DSP…
REW is GREAT!!!
For park-playing on your own or if you really don’t want to spend too much money, the Joyo is perfect.
Perfect timing, I just startet to look at that joyo too
I currently use a beaten up ue boom for playing, connecting with aux cable from a headphone amp that plugs directly to the instrument. It’s super annoying because as soon as it finds annother device via bluetooth it stops playing the aux signal
looking for a replacement now that either has no bluetooth or is able to play from 2 sources and is portable/small.
Ah, for Biel the Joyo is perfect!
I remember that after 20:00 the city is dead quiet (die Bürgersteige wurden hochgeklappt!) - with the Joyo you will not get any trouble with people on the other side of the city ![]()
ouch there was a typo. Haha you really didn’t like Biel did you?
Unfortunately I don’t live there anymore
Also not ready yet to bother others than my boyfriend and our cat with my bass playing ![]()
I have two different use cases for it. That’s why I bought one.
First, I can change rooms in my apartment and take it with me. I have a U-Green USB Nexode Power Bank 20000mAh 130W that can power it for many hours, so I won’t need to use the supplied power brick.
Second, I have a friend who plays acoustic guitar and sings for small groups. The Joyo would be perfect for that situation.
Nonono - I had a great time, especially cause of my project. Also, I could speak french there, which is a plus!
I just found it really really really boring, as city to live in. But then: I also find Hamburg (= where I live) very boring. Not as boring as Biel, but very boring.
I like the rock’n roll life style, so the opposite of Biel and Hamburg ![]()
Ah … cool! Waiting for the video of that ![]()
