This should be in “project bass” thread
You are right … I wasn’t paying attention to the theme. I don’t even remember why I uploaded the wiring diagram I used for my brother’s Stratocaster. This is a Bass Forum not a guitar forum.
Why this one?
I heard quite some good stuff about Warman Humbuckers: https://www.warmanguitars.co.uk/product-category/electric-guitar-pickups/electric-bass-guitar-pickups/
I’m excited for a potential project. MIJ style Jaguar bass with all EMG pickups and electronic. But wait EMG don’t make slide switch and roller, well they do in their Jazz master Pickguard set. The question is, will it work on basses, or will they offer one?
I emailed Anthony at EMG and he said that he’s ordering one of electronic for Jaguar and trying to see how they work and if he can make a prototype for it (me) I hope this work.
Time to set aside some funds or make an appointment to sell one of my kidney for this project,
What are all the dials and doodads?
Ok, this is about a very very very old post, I know!
I’m thinking about modding a P/J short scale with two Fishman Fluence Bass 4 Soapbars (eg the set).
Maybe you can answer some questions:
- Are/were you happy with these pickups?
- Did you route your bass? Did you use templates?
- Is there anything to consider when installing those pickups?
This isn’t a very very old post.
There’s one on the internet that I’ve revived every five years for almost 20 years just to let the original blowhard who started it know that I’m still waiting for him to meaningfully contribute. It’s about time to do that again…
I’m very happy with these pickups and I’ve been impressed with every bass that’s come out with them since.
I have a friend who is a master machinist. We used his 50 year old Deckel FP3L mill to machine out the slots.
There is nothing to consider with these pickups that you wouldn’t have to consider with installing any other pickups, ie, “Do they have enough clearance to fit in, and be adjusted?” and “Are the electronics going to fit in the existing space, or am I going to have to route the back of this damn thing as well?”
Hahaha. Cool!
It’s on top of my shortlist now.
Will give feedback in about 5 years
Damn. It’s been 21 years, 1 month and 24 days since that thread started and they’ve archived the forum in the time I last replied. Only thing to do is to start a new thread, referencing the old one and ask if anything has happened since…
This is awesome follow-through. I am impressed.
My students went home for the Christmas break last Friday, so with spare time on my hands and a small pile of offcuts, I created my Christmas present, another ‘travel’ scale mini-bass (22"-23" multi-scale) using Beech, Oak, Iroko and Walnut with a 3 band pre-amp.
To add some jeopardy, I am contemplating making my own pickups. I have made three wood cases, acquired the bar magnets. Just waiting for 0.25kg of copper wire to arrive, then some experimentation with a cordless drill and a sewing machine…
…still needs sanding and oiling, and the fourteenth fret.
It’s a baby whale.
(couldn’t resist)
What did you do in the end?
All my bridges are prepared for string-through, and I would like to extend my choice of potential strings to include medium scale - in addition to short scale.
Also: if you drilled, did you drill at 90° angle, or at a 45° angle. Some say, 45° is better cause this will not bend the strings too much.
I didn’t drill in the end. If I did, it would have been at the standard 90 degrees. There’s a lot of basses and guitars with 90 degree string through, and no problems. I have two now, and several others over the years, and never had an issue.
I think you’ll find purists arguing that 45 degrees is better, but not people complaining that the 90 degrees caused an issue.
Hey, all. I’ve been admiring folks work on their project basses for a while and finally started mine today, after getting a Donner P-Bass, a G&L MFD P-bass pickup, and a p-bass wiring kit (with pots and Jack) from StewMac. Never soldered a thing in my life, but got awesome help from my brother.
Wired everything up, installed the new pickup, et voila! Awesome, powerful, full sound coming out of the amp!
