I don’t even know if this post is related for this topic, and if so feel free to delete it. I’ve been doing the courses (currently on module 3) and i have a feeling that i am going too fast without any extra practice. So my question is what should i practice in parallel with the courses.
Thank you
P. S. I do have some bass experience from playing some long ago
The course is designed so that you don’t have to practice anything outside the lessons. It may seem like you’re going “too fast” because you do have the prior experience so it isn’t all new to you. Meanwhile, there are people who have never touched a bass before they started, and possibly never any musical instrument so the early modules are more difficult for them. But Josh has said that there is no “outside” practice necessary while doing the course.
hello @4stringed_butcher I’m new to bass aswell and have similar thoughts as you
what I do, 2 practice sessions a day, mornings I will do 2 lessons from the course, try to get all that good info in my porous brain and play along, after that I will do some finger practice stuff I picked up from youtube videos, and I also go back to older lessons in the program, I have a few bookmarked I like, I’m in module 6 right now and been going back to some stuff I liked from module 5 and 6, feels good to play something you know and can play
and then after dinner I play the practice videos from the morning session again and also do some practice and old lessons.
no idea if this is a good plan or not, but like you I feel like I wanna play more and dont want to rush through more than 2 per day
You go at the pace that works for you. Like others have said, no outside practice is needed, however, you may wish to start looking for EASY (see the stress on that word) songs to learn in tandem. Have a look at the 50 (now 100) song pack in the extras and the threads related to the first 50 songs (that’s all there used to be) for more info.
The course will slow you down when it needs to, lol.
Just roll with the course. Don’t worry too much about practice outside of it. Like Josh says, it’s not worth sticking on a specific lesson and practicing the medium or hard workout until you can nail it. Once you’re good on the slow workout - maybe listen to the medium and hard workouts for any tips or tricks - move on because going through the course will naturally make you better.
You can always go back for multiple runs through the course (I’m almost done with my 2nd) and you’ll see that.
