Regarding the Post your Covers thread

Hi Pam and all, I know Pam from another bass course site. I would love to do this, and am working towards it. I only started in August last year and missed about two months for travel, being stuck out of the country and away from the bass, so only about four months real learning time, and am not quite ready. I can just about get through one full song just now. But these are all great tips. Thanks for this post/thread.

Hi Pam Iā€™m in Mark Smithā€™s Talking Bass Study Group. Mark and Josh are the only two online tutors Iā€™ve used so far. I just finished the Beginner to BadAss course about a month ago, and have done the first two of Markā€™s and gone back and redone the first, now redoing the second (Iā€™m a slow learner!). Iā€™ll also go over parts of Joshā€™s again. Not sure why I have been called ā€˜Mike5ā€™ - I donā€™t recall writing that, perhaps I am the 5th Mike in this forum???

Thereā€™s already a ā€œmikeā€ and a ā€œmike6ā€ registered here . . . maybe the system automatically added a 5

Welcome aboard and glad to have you with us!

Cheers,

I wish more people would post their coversā€¦even if you think you suck just do it anyways cause some constructive criticism will help you a lot.

@Noisembryo agree 100%! How can you ever know if youā€™re doing well, or where you need improvement if you donā€™t ask other people? Post your covers is a perfect place to show your stuff, and get needed encouragement or constructive critique.

Working on mine tonight. Having some kidney/prostate trouble (I know, too much information), so I have off of work until next Saturday until I can go to a specialist to fix it.

Best wishes @Sp33dSnakr. What cover are you working on?

One of my problems (other than lack of ability) is that I start working my way through a song, but before I finish it, some other song grabs my interest, so I switch to that, but before I finish it, some other songs grabs my ā€¦ well, you get the idea. I just need to force myself to finish one before my ā€œsong ADDā€ kicks in.

Also, I donā€™t really know how to remove the bass from the original (and yes, Iā€™ve seen the forum posts - just havenā€™t worked through the process), or how to sync and edit videoā€¦ Lots to learn that doesnā€™t involve playing the song.

Ah yes, I can relate. You have no idea how many intros of songs I have recorded and then moved on to something else.

It happens to me as well, but I finish the first song all the way through and look forward to the next. Keep focused.

Turbo Lover - Judas Priest

I just finished a relatively clean cut of it, now Iā€™m trying to make Reaper work, lol

I wish I could say this gets better, butā€¦ my friend and I currently have two in the pipe and are starting on a third. We were four deep on Friday

My biggest problem is deciding when they are finished and just putting them out there.

So true. People are very supportive here and I really value the feedback I have received.

I feel that way about originals too! Even if itā€™s just some riff ideas. Iā€™m enjoying the covers, but I love hearing people break out of the structured arena and start exploring in their ownā€¦and even simplicity doesnā€™t matter.

Weā€™re using covers to rebuild skills and get back into the groove of playing together, this time with 5000 miles between us!

Also, it is outstanding music production practice, since we do covers as a cover band and not using backing tracks. One big reason it is so good for this is that you by definition have an excellent reference track to compare to

Oh for sure, probably shouldnā€™t have said anythingā€¦not discouraging covers at all, just encouraging originals too, I just always find it interesting to hear people with their own flavor and style that seeps through in their original ideas.

No, your comment is totally valid. I was reinforcing it

original production is our eventual goal. That and jamming in cafes, if I can get my friend to move here.
