This morning I woke up to the truly wonderful cover of “100%” by Sonic Youth, played by @faydout.
Man … that was exactly the song to start my day and match my strooong coffeee!
Naturally, I want to play that song too, and luckily I do have the tabs as guitar pro file (done by @alex_b, RIP).
Unfortunately the tabs have repeats … those always confuse me:
why not just learn to read and use them as intended? They are there precisely to allow a nice concise representation of repeated segments. This is actually useful information
The thing about repeats like that is they make learning the song much easier. It’s telling you straight away “you just need to learn this bit once, and then repeat it”. That’s super useful.
TBH this is the first time I have heard someone want to make a tab or sheet music longer and more repetitive and like a piano-roll. It’s never occurred to me that someone would even want that as it removes really useful info.
I don’t know anything that can do that and I actually always do the opposite; many tabs do not have repeats and I redo them so they do. Otherwise there is far too much scrolling of the tab.
I can’t answer the question, ‘cos I don’t actually create tabs. I just google them when I need them.
For me, the approach to this song would be to listen to it, learn the phrases and then just repeat, while listening the song. @faydout seemed to suggest that he got the song down pretty quickly. Obviously, you need to keep track of where you are, but there are often nuances that help with that, if not, it’s either counting bars or feel. There are plenty of covers that I have done, where you have to be “on it” to know where you are…
Thank you, it’s an easy one to get down. I picked it up and recorded it in one evening and half of that was messing with fuzz. One thing though, it’s a lot easier to just jump to the A string. Much more efficient since you can plant your hand in one position and keep it there most of the song. Looking forward to your version
Yeah - already playing it and waiting for the sun to allow me to go outside to practice in the park! It’s a very cool song, really!
I just converted it to MIDI (in Tux Guitar - GP and Muse Score introduced errors), so that got rid of the repeats.
In fact “your” fuzz made me want to play that song. I’m experimenting with different plugins as we speak.
I also experimented with different ways to do the fingering. @alex_b’s way did not fit my style … and the MIDI conversion changed the fingering to nonsense.
Now I have a nice way to play it, so I’m waking up my party neighbours with earth shattering Sonic Youth now
