Interesting thing about seeing Wax Taylor live was to discover what was sampled and what was original. The Cello lead was live; band has an electric Cello player.
There’s some excellent orchestral sample libraries.
Oh cool, haven’t heard him in a really long time
My favourite ‘live’ mix using samples on a Novation Launchpad . This song is 15 years old and is still on my playlist when I train / run. I’ve heard it hundreds of times out running and still love it.
Only tune of his I have heard. I’ll need to give the whole album a listen.
He was big in the bay area when I lived there, part of the SF House music scene
Ok, that helps explain the RJD2. This was some of their first stuff that I heard. Bought the CD. So this is based on orchestral samples, right?
And loops, yeah
This is great, big fan of using arpeggiators as the primary motif like this. Probably the masterclass for me for this is how Skinny Puppy uses them in Solvent:
They were also among the biggest pioneers of using samples in music, often from horror movies but really from all over the place.
Interesting, I will check out more of their stuff

Newer version of Solvent re-recorded for one of their recent albums:
For Skinny Puppy, I would recommend starting at the very beginning with Remission. When this album dropped in 1984, there was nothing like it before.
You can hear the obvious use of samples starting from “Glass Houses” and it increased over their next few albums to be a ubiquitous part of their music. They were more of an art project to start and they kept that artistic sense throughout, great A/V shows.
You really need full digital for these guys, I’d look on Apple Music or one of the streaming services; a lot of the youtube uploads of their early stuff is muddy.
