"Share some good music" Friday

I saw them play at a little side music area in Disneyland Anaheim when I was about 5 years old, maybe 8.
It was between 77 and 80 would be my best guess.

(I should clarify I am talking about the original Mahvishnu Orchestra)

DisneyLand was alot different back then and there were several stages around the park that could handle live music.
Like under the rockets there was a food stand and music stand
Over where they put star tours and whatever it is now, and somewhere closer to the castle, and pirates
and others around the water areas.

Now that I think of it, back when I was a kid, there was always live music, all over disney land.

anyway, I recall this, I heard them and went nuts. I thought it was the coolest ever.
At that early age, I already wanted to be a drummer, and dug Billy Cobham big time.

Well, this was I guess an announced tour for them, so we got up and went to the park in the morning because they had the special afternoon rehearsal for the evening show. We went home around 1, after the show, my folks wanted me to take a nap, so we could stay out late and see the evening show with no problems.

I don’t recall when we went back, probably about 4:30. We lived pretty close, and traffic back then was not bad in Orange County.

Well, Me. “Mr. Toughguy”, yeah, thats right Jerkey, I was a tough guy, I did not sleep a wink. I kept asking my parents what we were doing home, I am not tired.
So I got my mom to admit to me that her and dad needed a rest.
So I was running around restless, not getting rest, making it hard for them to rest.
We get up and go back and do some rides, and then go get seats to the show, in an open area, either on chairs, or like bring your own blankest type area (long gone now)

the show starts, and Light out, I am dead asleep for the rest of the night.
I sure as shit taught my parents a lesson didn’t I.

It is the damndest thing
I have not thought of that in 40 years, and never would have though of it had I not saw (Mahavishnu Orchestra) in the Youtube banner across the top.
And its been 41-44 years since that night, and I remember it like it happened yesterday.

But I don’t know what I had for lunch. LOL.

Yeah, famously no theory knowledge, no instrumental skill (cannot play piano), etc. And yet he does layered and complex chord work that is just really really good for movement between feelings.

Man, you got loads of stories, Toby  - funny, sad, poignant, reflective, crazy… Ever thought of writing them all up? Could be therapeutic… cathartic even… IDK, Charles Bukowski-style or Elmore Leonard-style??

If I did it
I would have to go full bore Bukowski,
but I don’t drink anymore,
so I guess I missed my calling

She can’t play bass. I could make a video of my cat playing better bass than her.

I think I am missing what’s wrong with that bassline? Sounded fine to me…

The overall style wasn’t my thing but the bassline seemed fine.

It’s a music video . . . meant to be glamorous and glitzy . . .

She wasn’t actually playing the bass that she was gyrating with while the video was being shot.

The bassline seemed fine to me too, @howard

Cheers

This is one of my favorite bands, Babymetal. This vid is a compilation, and has a few consistency errors but shows what the band is about. Boh is great bassist, and how he works with the drummer is how I aspire to be.

There was a discussion on keys other than major and minor; the opening of this song and the breakdown show an alternative, tri-tones with a diminished fifth, which is a structure you don’t see much in Western music because the Church banned it from ecclesiastical music. But you see it in Asian music.

The song about it is how women are forced to mask their true feelings.

Nice! I have been listening to them since Bob Mintzer joined (mid-90s, I think).

Their current bass player is Dane Alderson, who mostly plays a 6-string. He’s got a nice solo here:
