I’m not quite sure how to describe that. Psychedelic prog-gaze post-metal?

I love the nonstop Guitar-Face the lead guy has going, sounding out the chords while playing. He’s awesome

Also: that painting of a gorilla with a paint roller - give it to me!

Yeah, that would have been cough my guess too cough

yeah, hard to describe. it’s not metal but some kind of Psychedelic prog-gaze yeah  the second part reminds me of a classy version of Pavement or Fugazi.

Maybe we’ve had this one already… but it is just too good not to re-post. And it gives me goosebumps every time - Led Zeppelin’s No Quarter

The mood that JPJ creates with the chorus/phased/flanged e-piano is just stunning, and who needs a bass when you have the booming drumming of Jon Bonham. Also, there are probably thousands of kids nowadays that have better technique than Jimmy Page, but I guess you’d be hard pressed to find even a handful who can coax as much grit and soul out of a guitar than he does - especially also in this tune.

And the vocals… that voice… sorry, growlers, move over

Listen to the music - don’t worry about the video (which is from their “The Song Remains the Same” movie, I guess!? Happy Friday!

Stumbled on these guys yesterday while researching a bass on YouTube. The bass I was looking into a guy was playing while doing a cover of this song. Anyway, like the style of this group.

This is one is for @terb and the prog-post-stoner metal fans in the house. This album came out last week, the band is killer, they’re on tour right now in the US (supporing Cult of Luna) and these bass lines!!!

And - for @joergkutter - the first time I heard that song was on a Crowbar album. I loved it. When I heard Zep’s original version, high school me was all like “man, that is super weak…”
I love it now, but heavy metal Gio was not impressed.
So, here’s the super chunky, constipated vocal glory of Crowbar’s “No Quarter”

Thanks for posting this, @Gio - interesting to hear, for sure. But, to my ears, they pretty much butchered that song (maybe that was their intent!?) - none of the magic left, and that rubbery rubato tempo is a quite annoying. As for the vocals… well, I guess I just don’t get it… but that is probably what 15 or so years age difference will do - we have been exposed to rather different types of music in our formative years. Zep’s version of this song definitely has some interesting high school memories for me linked to it :wink:

Oh, for sure.
It’s such an acquired taste. All the subtlety of a sledge hammer! But at the same time I was spinning Jaco, and Mahavishnu Orchestra, and solo records by Pattitucci and Stanley Clarke and all manner of proggy, fusion-y goodness.
It’s just that I love chunky guitar riffs so much!!!

Ok being as I am on a “ancient” music kick…lets of some VIKING music! At first I was like WTF…but its really growing on me. And the lady singer’s voice is so angelic! @Timberfist should appreciate this!

There’s a band on 4ad called Dead Can Dance that you might like.

They also released one song with 4ad’s house band, This Mortal Coil.

Dead Can Dance are still making albums!

Come to think of it, you might like all of This Mortal Coil, or for that matter, Cocteau Twins

File under “surprisingly good covers”… Tom Jones and The Cardigans covering Burning Down The House.

That… is not a mix I would have anticipated working.

That reminds me, so far I am liking every song on Rheia that I have heard.

You know, they don’t have a bass player, you should call them

Yeah. I didn’t see that coming. Damn cool cover.

I kind of want to see a “making of” for this video because in the last two minutes, that’s a lot of legs to have in one place.

This whole album is phenomenal. Thanks again @terb.

When the album Ten Summoners Tales was released in 1993 (?) they also released a VHS of live recordings of all the songs. I loved this album and it came at a perfect time in my life. My son had just been born and whenever we were home alone together I would put in that VHS to be background music for us. Very chill. Great music for holding babies.

glad you like it @howard ! my favorite song of Oathbreaker is from their very first EP, it’s more “core” than what they make now :

I think I’m a post-hardcore / sludgecore guy

and here is another band I like (especially for their early records), probably more in the mathcore side :

Aww yeah, straight up hardcore punk
