Yes, but it is OK. I am one who goes thru phases alot. I doubt that my current bass will always be my go to bass, and usually it is something way out of left field that changes things, like you never expected it.

My vote would be to keep her.
It is a 5 string, so its not like you are keeping a bunch of 4 strings around.
It gives you better options to play with others based on what they want to play. A Huffier might not fit in great with a harder classic / southern rock (or maybe it does, who am I to say, but its my guess) cover band that might want to use your services for the evening, but the BB would fit right in.
it is OK to have a collection, and you may get a hankering one day and say, I want to play Rosie, and then you have her.
It might be to replay a cover you did that you really liked playing and really felt at home with her…
Either way, its up to you and whatever choice you make is the right one.

Yeah. The BB is also a whole lot more versatile than the Hofner. It will work for styles/songs the Hofner won’t be as good a fit for.

LOL, yeah, it’s the only bass he has (so he claims), but he and Melvin and El Heft, have played the same instruments for years, and always have the same ones with them at a show or on videos, so I guess I believe it to be so. Thats been the same for almost 4 decades, so yeah, seems to be. Or they are very sentimental towards their instruments.

But he does play different basses in “Me First and the Gimme Gimme’s”, but maybe it belongs to the band, or Fat Wrek Chords studio instead.

it is a cool bass, and sounds great, as I love Fat Mike’s bass-lines

(interesting fact about Fat Mike that I did not know until just the other day, he Up Picks his bass, doesn’t down pick it. Or at least he starts from an Up pick and down picks when needed)

That’s where I really struggle. Maybe my hearing isn’t as acute as it should be (I lost 20% of my hearing due to radiation treatments), I can’t detect any difference when I play the Hofner or the BB.
What styles or songs do you feel the Hofner won’t fit into?

The BB would definitely lend itself nicely to more aggressive styles (even staying within rock) whereas I don’t think the Hofner really would as well. It wouldn’t be bad, but the BB would definitely handle it better, more punchy and growly compared to the Hofner’s roundness.

At least from what I have heard from the Hofs.

I’m thinking of doing a “Taste Test” with recordings of the Hofner and the Yammie BB and see how many people can identify them. What do you think?

Sounds like fun!

I’m mystified by Rickenbackers. I recall in the severnties it was THE bass to have but I never even got to look at one in a music shop then just a few years ago a friend of a friend who always fancied himself as a bassist thrust one into my hand and said “whaddya think of this beauty”. I had to make polite noises but it was horrible. I’ve never hald anything so unwieldy and uncomfortable in my hands. He talked about ‘his band’ and I always thought he was the bassist and then my friend told me he only managed the band and didn’t play a note. Figures. I reckon if he did he’s sell it in an instant. And the funny thing is you hardly ever hear anyone mention them these days. Does ANYONE on bassbuzz own a Rickenbacker? This guy doesn’t seem to think a lot of them but how much truth is there to what he actually says:

There’s at least three people with Ricks here.

I had one when I was a kid, and it is one of two basses left on my bucket list. they, like p basses, haven’t changed much over the years. they definitely have a look, sound and feel of their own. which in most cases is going to lead to a love it or hate it situation.

Ditto that, @itsratso

Either a 4003 in Autumnglo, or an American Professional II Jazz Bass . . .

Allen Woody played a Hofner with The Allman Brothers Band
Coincidently, I’m working on my next cover, which is an ABB song. I’ll be playing it on the Hofner.

There are also several hollow body basses now with his name on them…

Hofners are a lot more popular than I give them credit for, Pam @PamPurrs
