Should I shoot my new bass? (Modding the Harley Benton MV-4MSB)

I printed about 60 shirts with my own motifs:

About 40-50 of them are black.
I just grab the top short on the heap every morning and I’m set, so I can relate…

I just expect the same rules for everybody, sorry!

I am very open to all kinds of fun, really. But the limits should not be floating…

That is my decision, yes! But why can we not accept that? I love the progress on those basses. Don’t want to sell it, so I don’t think in terms of “value” - only in terms of budget (cause I must).

Remarks like “Send it back” are not helpful…

Pay the material costs and I will do that - I have PayPal

I see that and respect that. But again: same rules should apply. That’s all I’m asking.

So, @MikeC - maybe solve my knob issue instead of singing about it ^^

Agreed!
I’m here for the fun and the info. Zze ZZeerman forum just gets me info (nobody questions Harley Benton over here :-))

No, of course I’m not on the Aussi forum. But Pitbull kit forum sounds funny!

I thought I did when I suggested that you change the pots with solid shaft and you said yes you would.

you are above many rules that’s why we are participating on your thread, we like you and your good nature. If it’s someone else pushing back so hard I just stop participating. Try posting this on TB and see how you like the responses.

Yeah - neither Schaller, nor MusicStore nor Thomann found fitting (6.0mm) solid shaft pots.
Thomann support even asked me to tell them my solution, if I found one…
They will be following this thread too, as one of the support guys is also an avid Harley Benton modder…

So I’m back to square one.

???
Split shaft pots are 6mm. Strats style pots. sold shaft short or long are for Gibson 6.3mm. that’s the lingo.

@Whying_Dutchman, could you summarise your modding story for me? I don’t have time to read the whole thread………work stress and all that!!!

Oh, you were mentioning my bass dancing. Latest posting is up on the covers thread!

Nonono. Again, I find some remarks also offensive, but I accepted that before the rant I had to endure before. It was never an issue for me.

Now I am confused why others can post stuff like “send back the bass” or other similar remarks (that are often borderline “passive/aggressive”, to quote a statement), but I cannot have my kind of fun.

I absolutely accept any remark here, but I also would like that my remarks are accepted.

As for you, @Al1885 - I have nothing but positive to say. You think about everthing, are always helpful - and all jokes are good natured. So: no worries!

Summary: changed about everything, except body and neck. Very happy

Yay! Your videos surpass the “Gangnam Style” videos of a few years ago

Excactly! So, I was confused, when Schaller’s grannie told me that my knobs are for the 6mm spilit shafts, and Thomann and Musicstore told me that knobs with screws are for solid shaft (which do not exist in 6.3mm, apparently - except for EMG).

I ended up in the Twilight Zone for knobs and shafts

Bottom line: I need to retry with 6mm split shaft, maybe other/longer ones…

Not so fast dude!!!

Might I remind you that you are tryin to make holes into the back of your bass body like Swiss Cheese and tinted your neck dark. So if all goes as plan it would have been everything. Post that on a HB forum you’d get kicked out, :joy:

I have no idea what you are talking about and am unsure if that is a compliment or an insult!! :face_with_peeking_eye:

It’s not very difficult I’ve done it with narrow painter’s tape wrap around a bunch of times and shove in the 6.3 knobs then tighten sets screw. No wobbles. it helps if the cavity is a bit deeper but as I recall the bell knob are quite shallow.

Hahaha, ok that was a “Schnapps Idee” (German for “stupid idea”), I admit.
Just wanted to test the responses, and see if somebody might make sense of it. I would have gone for it, but rejected the idea quickly based on your input!
Just like the Avocado bass :frowning:

That, on the other hand, still keeps me busy. The fretboard will not remain as it is. It will be darker, maybe even black.
I am not looking forward to changing the colour of the binding or the back though.
So this will remain the way it is for some time, until I have the energy to rethink and the skills/tools to do it.

By the way … still having thoughts about making Ronin fretless one day, so there you go

Hmmmm … challenge accepted

It’s a compliment of course. My girlfriend tells me to say “hi,” as she also cannot wait for your next covers ^^

Like a Cherry liqueur? you can use that too you know in a control way. pour it over the neck and set it on fire for a few seconds. Just have to make sure you do the most important thing, you need to video it, just in case it fails you can watch the replay.

Before you do anything to the neck check first if there’s any fret sprouts and if it’s properly smooth. You can always put some love on it.

Best mods you can do to your bass is to make it feels amazing and it usually cost nothing. I display these basses at my restaurant, it’s my own Joe Dart and 2 Squier basses that I actually worked on. Even bassists who picked it up asked if they are for sale before they even hear how it plays. Because I know how a good bass should feel like.

Sorry, but when you espouse to be posting in complete honesty and/or humor about something, but you make provocative, ancillary comments about stuff unrelated, and another forum member responds to those comments in kind, especially in a musical way, somehow it’s not cool? That just doesn’t track.

If I do that I will surely make a video of that, rest assured

Again - I am happy to accept any comment you make, really. You can diss my bass, my modding effort, you can have fun about politics, religion, the 2nd amendment, anything! You can even put some new wording to the Dutch national anthem, inserting knobs in the lyrics wherever you want. Don’t like it anyway ^^
But I wish that it would be the other way around too!

So - let’s restart, ok?

Hi, I’m Chris and I like to mod! You?

What are the plastic thingies next to the pickups? Is that to cover previous cavities? Or an elaborated thumb rest?
