Should I shoot my new bass? (Modding the Harley Benton MV-4MSB)

I refuse to believe you can’t buy 6mm solid shaft pots on the internet.

I stumbled over those too. They are quite hard to get in Germany, but I had found one address (in Holland) after quite some back & forth.

The vendor himself did not recommend Bourns, as they seem to have a wide range/tolerance of actual resistance values (eg not 250k).
I did not understand half of it, but even that vendor told me to go for a “brand” and take 6mm split pots (providing I install the knobs correctly)…

You mean the hugely successful American electronics company. OK right then!

Bourns are fine, so are Alpha. And I have 6mm CTS solid shaft pots myself, they exist

Even in Europe!

Link in Germany - just to satisfy my curiousity!?

Anyway, this is solved, so I will focus on the remaining topics:

  • 14mm/24mm washer for the tuners. Also hard to get, so will make the 13mm hole of DIN 125 washers fit 14mm.
  • Shortening intonation screws
  • black string retainer for Ronin (thanks, @terb!)
  • Darkening the fretboard. Or making it black. Haven’t deciced…

That’s 6mm length, not diameter, right?

I am sure you can Google right up there with the pros. I posted one in the UK, as much as thry hate to admit it, they are in Europe.

ahh weird, it is. The pic is of a
9.5 length pot, mea culpa.

hmm this is weird. Need to check my 6mm pots, I wonder if they are Alphas. Not seeing metric CTS in solid after all. Looks like I was wrong.

It happens

Why do you need 6mm. Clearly when you used the 6mm you needed the adapter sleeve. You need 6.3 or 6.4mm clearly. There are only 2 sizes.

pics or it didn’t happen

That’s why:

This whole thread reminds me of a word I learned when I lived in Germany.

Hahahaha, yeah, actually I am waiting for some black screws and the black string retainer for Ronin, so it has more of a finished look.

So that would be tomorrow!

But here you go:

It’s also one of my favourite words

You will have some more opportunities for “Schadenfreude” … I’m guessing the fretboard adventure will have quite a potential for catastrophe…

I already got the gloves for the dyeing, but have not decided on the method yet.

Nah, I’m not reading anymore of this thread.

This whole thing has the aesthetic of watching someone repeatedly slamming their hand in a car door.

Painful to watch and it appears they haven’t learned anything from the process.

Good luck.

Thanks

Oh, much better!

Ha, I love that my translator doesn’t even try on that one. The dictionary says gloating/mischievous… Although I’m not sure how I feel about it being feminine.

This is one of the cases, where a translation does not match the intention.

“Schadenfreude” does not necessarily have a negative connotation. It’s also kind of a amiable “told you so” feeling, and I think it’s ok if people here feel that, when they follow my modding adventure. Also ok, to give up on this thread … the “experts” think WTF, and beginning modders might be overwhelmed.

But I have a lot of fun … and the result is truly great!
