Should I shoot my new bass? (Modding the Harley Benton MV-4MSB)

I’ll give them a shot, I mean it’s only strings

Yeah, I’d be curious to hear about your experience.

I find the hex core medium gauge Power Wounds to have great feel on a shorty, plus they sound ballsy.

Better than the D’addario EXL160S (050-070-085-105).?

They only cost 22 EUR too…

For my money and taste, yes. SIT strings are from a small company with great quality control and consistency. Highly recommended.

Cool! And the strings are 30", not 32"?

I’ll try to get them too…

Longer strings are fine, you can just cut them to length with most tuning machines.

So, you would use a 105 string in a standard tuner??! I wouldn’t do that - the risk of breakage is very high (if it fits at all).

no risk whatsoever, I do it all the time and in fact one of my basses is .105 now.

I have used .135 with them as well, it’s not like 5 strings have beefier tuning machines. They are the same.

My point is: if you cut long scale strings to short scale you will like have to wind the thick string around the tuner … and insert it into it’s hole. Both seems a risk to me!

You do that, even with 135???!

This is no problem with tuners I have used. YMMV.

Ok - on my short scale the distance between bridge (end) and nut is 80cm (31.5").
The distance between bridge (end) and first tuner (E) is 84cm (33").

That should work!

Pic or it didn’t happen!

On my Gotoh GB707 this would not be possible. I just tested it!

I have absolutely done it when I bought extra-long scale accidentally once. Worked fine. Might vary by tuning machine I guess but for me it was no problem at all.

Which tuners do you use?

stock, hipshot, and gotoh

I use Tomastik-Infeld Super Long (36” scale) Jazz Rounds in my 34”” scale basses. They work great, snipped to necessary length.

Yeah it’s really no problem at all in my experience.

You wind yours before you insert? I cut mine about 5.5 inches past the hole (if needed), insert and then loop it over the capstan downwards to get the slack out. Then I’ll wind it to tune. Less work and faster.

Yeah this is how you are supposed to do it.
