Should I shoot my new bass? (Modding the Harley Benton MV-4MSB)

It’s a great sound if you want rich and full, less punchy tones. Can be punchy too, pretty versatile.

The single humbucker on my G&L Kiloton is the most angry sounding pickup of any of the basses that I’ve tried except for the G&L L-2000 which has 2 of them. As far as fullness of sound, I opt for my Yamaha P bass when I’m going for more of a rich tone. The funny part is, the Kiloton is the one with the flats on it.

Yeah bridge humbuckers/MMs sound great for that. Need to be more careful with the neck; in extremis you get mud like with the EB-0.

It sounds incredible for anything that I play that’s more aggressive. It’s the go to for Sonic Youth for example. The Reverend, with those 3 J pickups is somewhere in the middle. I can EQ it either direction. Not quite as full sounding as the P bass but not as raw as the Kiloton. I may need to try it on Ambulance. that might be the kind of song where it really shines.

Man, I am a serial modder and fiddler, but you leave me in the dust.
As for the HBs, I reckon if shipping wasn’t so expensive I would be doing the same.
Actually I better be careful thinking that because Artist guitars down here are very affordable with free shipping…

Let’s be honest - anything that does not really modify the body or the neck is no real modding. I will feel like a modder when I defeated the dragon: routing a P/J body in order to install Humbuckers…

Until then, I just play Lego with the bass

Well, now that you mention that, the red body left from my last project is going to be for practicing routing

The cricket bat matching bass and guitar set is still on my list.
Afterall the Shadows did to “Cricket Bat Boogie”

Reluctantly agreed as my ears write a check for the music my skills can’t cash.

I hope that you’ll document your findings here at BassBuzz??!

My GF remarked: “Why does this guy masturbate his bass so badly when he’s clearly capable of making music you can dance to?”

That’s probably due to the sparkly Jazz end. I have the relentless P and I have similar experience sophisticated but unapologetically in your face.

Love Jaco, whether I could ever play his stuff, or not.

I saw Stanley Clarke play in concert once, and then Jaco in another concert. They each were great in their own right, but Jaco wasn’t only playing on another plane, he was playing from the deck of an entirely different starship. He was stunning to watch and hear. There are myriad reasons why bass greats revere his virtuosity and originality.

Well I encouraged you to keep listening to his music. One day it will hit you and you can blame me then, :joy:

I really really REALLY tried to like him. But it’s unlikely it will happen.
It might be a great exercise of virtuosity. But I feel no pleasure at all, listening to him. It’s like some free jazz or atonal “music”. Don’t get it and don’t want to get it

Also my foot does not move … that’s a bad sign!

Amen, @Al1885. Art is art.

From his first student at Berkeley who later became a music professor at Berkeley, he said that Jaco playing was even purer than what he put on his album. That’s just mind blowing.

Absolutely, @Al1885. I was absolutely stunned watching him. His playing in person was more than astounding. :+1:

Jaco is just not my thing. I can appreciate his artistry, but he’s not my jam.

Not putting him down. I would much rather play like Jack Bruce
