Should I shoot my new bass? (Modding the Harley Benton MV-4MSB)

Why these? They are flexible. Get a switch and you can change your configurations. With two of them there’s a lot of possibilities

Adding a preamp like a Dark Glass Tone Capsule and you’re set

Why Fishman? They are cool in their own right, one package and not the insane wiring possibilities

Hmmmmm … ok … but if I look at the price, I could get the Super-Quad pickups. They are not active, but they have a shiny LED that even blinks in different colours

All in all, the price increase is too significant. WIth the Fishman I get two Humbuckers and all other necessary stuff for about 300€.
I just sold my 2nd kidney, so that should be doable.

Also, bad news: I found a cheap/good way to route here in Hamburg. We seem to have a citizen art collective here that has some focus on CNC stuff etc…

An alternative would be 2x EMG 35DC and the EMG BTC System 2-Band EQ 3 Potis??!

it’s more to correct the neck angle I guess ?

then those pickups are not for you at this point. keep it simple, or at least keep it understandable

100% agreed!

I just really really really liked the sound of my first bass, the ESP LTD B-4E. Even with that bass I never touched the knobs (except volume).
The ESP has seems to have a custom EMG 35DC, so that’s why I am considering that.

Yes, I don’t think anyone does them for just tone

But I did hear someone say they used brass instead of wood shims for tone. I was pretty skeptical.

@Al1885 - you don’t happen to have a Spector Bantam 4 Short Scale?

It sounds great and has 2x EMG 35DC.

I would like to know more about the PU positions, measured from the 12th fret!

Can you help?

No I don’t have that. Are you trying to replicate the position?
You could go for the 35TW so you can select the coil. Much better tonal option for a few bucks more.

Yes, exactly! better to steal something good then to invent something bad ^^

35TW? I am totally overwhelmed from all the choice that EMG provides!
It’s Humbucker and single coil combined, right?

I could get the 35TWX cheaply. What do you think?

Spector Bantam 4 Short Scale - PU positions, measured from hires picture.

Yeah. I have a few TWX. I like them.

Hmmm … in fact I like any active EMG option. It’s just no fuzz to install, they always sound good … and they are cheap!

I think that Ronin will become a double Humbucker Bass soon!

Just be aware that when you go with X series if you want to ad the ABC you also need the X version.
Also the TW series can’t be used with Bass Treble control (BTC). As the VLPF already doing the active tone control part.

A B C, It’s easy as
1 2 3, as simple as
do re mi, A B C, 1 2 3

I think I just keep it with the stuff that I get with the EMG, no BTC etc.
I never touch the tone knobs anyway, so I’ll stay simple…

EDIT I just got a contact of a Hamburg Bass Player to help me with my modding idea: Uli Salm.

He is the German Al: 690 basses!

not sure if it’s better (probably not) but I like brass shims because it’s easy to get calibrated brass plates !

I would actually go 35DC bridge, 35CS neck, and the BTC, which is Ellefson’s setup. I did that on a bass and it rocks

What’s the difference between the 35DC and the 35CS?

And: do I really need the BTC?

Since @howard convinced me to play dry and do everything else in the mix, I did not touch any tone knob anymore … it made my life so much simpler
