Should I shoot my new bass? (Modding the Harley Benton MV-4MSB)

Good point you wouldn’t want to spoil the pick guard. Oh wait……

True, this patient may be beyond medical science at this point.

Should be fine, just drill corner holes to cut from/to.

@barney - your responses here show why skills are often not sufficient. You need a little phantasy and the will to try unconventional approaches. And you need patience…
The way I did this, and with the next steps, this will look absolutely perfect. Hopefully…

The way you react, I can imagine why you said you are skilled, but not talented!
Also, with your “skills” , I would have hoped for more constructive input, not the ever tiring sarcastic Barney show.
If a restaurant owner and an IT engineer can contribute more than a carpenter, something is wrong.

You can do better, find it in yourself

Yep, that was my last thought yesterday night.
Drill holes in the corner, use a cutting disk to cut diagonal lines through the center and then use a knife to cut the edges cleanly. Break away the resulting triangles…

After that, put the wrapping film on it, and it will look as good as new…

Use your imagination. Can you not see it?

These are the pickguards and control plates for my basses:

On the left you see the “virgin” pickguard and control plate. It still has the hole where the pickup selection switch was. This will get some cool “shift, flip & colour wave” wrap film, that will change colour, depending on viewing angle.

In the middle you see the Frankenstein pickguard. The hole for the PU switch is filled already, also the screw holes for the thumbrest. This works perfectly since several months now.
The control plate is already wreaped in black car film, also since several months. I will use the same wrap film for the pickguard as for the control plate.

On the right side you see a finished pickguard and a control plate were unnecessary holes are filles and both are wrapped with matte silver wrap film (it was turtoise before). Also, those are in use for several months now.

Below you see some samples of wrap film (3M, series 2080 - the best!).

It’s a proven solution, but I do admit that the Humbucker cavity needed some lateral thinking, which might be innate and cannot be learned ^^

@Al1885 - I hope you are OK???! Just switched on CNN and saw images of hell, with LA in the background!?

Be safe!!!

Removed some of the hardened epoxy putty on the backside of the pickguard.
It’s a perfect fit!

Marked the positions for cutting and drilling, so now the next step is pretty exciting.

Perhaps I should not use the black wrap film and leave it like that? Is this still road worn, or already something next level?

This brings to mind Dead Kennedy’s second album (the one after the In God We Trust, Inc. EP)

Well, slowly I am approaching their 3rd album

The pickup fits!

I need to sand the edges of the PU cavity, carefully, as the right side broke off while cutting (it’s fixed already), I had to revert to using a cutting disk, at very low speed, so I would not use too much pressure.

After sanding the surface I can apply the wrap film. Need to wait until the dust settles though - every little dust particle is always visible if it finds it’s way under the wrap film…

Both second and third work, yeah

I had this song playing hypnotically on repeat in my mind, all the time while going berserk on the pickguard:

You might be the only one here that knows the song and the band (and @faydout, perhaps)

Bitte denk’ an nichts
Glaube mir
Alles ist gut

Please, don’t think about anything
Believe me
Everything is good/ok

It helped!

“The Gun” could also fit

Hahaha - I’m moving on to “Under Control” by Adam Freeland!

EDIT Funny side effect: my fingers have seized working after using super glue. My finger tips are covered with a thick layer, even my smartphone does not recognize my fingers anymore … and I can’t get a grip on strings.

My day is over…

Thanks. It’s pretty bad lots of cleaning up to do and lots of minor damages. I just woke up I don’t even want to go outside and check. :joy:

As long as you, family and friends are safe (and your basses), everything is ok!

Funny you mentioned that. My brother left for Bangkok last night, his flight was delayed. I guess it’s everything but headwinds.

Ok, girlfriend is gone on a “chicks weekend”, whatever that is…

I have put the wrap film on the Frankenstein pickguard.
The backside looks like this:

Oh, no … it sucks … BassBuzzers faint … but fear not, my friends, this is the backside.
Some of you surely prefer the backside - no judgement here - but let’s flip it:

Oh yeah. Much better!
Yes, there are imperfections. Should have sanded a little more, but for now that’s ok. I still have wrap film left for a final go.

@barney - I really think we would make a great team! Are you sure, you don’t wanna move to Germany?

You have the skills and good tools. I possess some imagination, lateral thinking and the will to try something rather unconventional.
You criticize everything you don’t (want to) understand, I have a positive outlook on things, no matter how crazy it seems.

Together we are perfect!
Think about it!

And … this is it!

The imperfections are clearly visible, but I will have one more go to make it perfect. I need to install a 9V battery box anyway.

My girlfriend (who is reading this thread with great amusement, and I quote: “boys!”) started calling Ronin “the Barney bass”, grinning evilly when she says it!

I hope that she meant the guy from the Flinstones, and I hope even more that the name will not stick
