And me
Of course you do.
I suspected that, but I didn’t want to lure you into this thread, cause of its p@nis-size comparison nature
I actually know the band name and there’s one song I have heard and remembered
But yeah, not my thing
Yes, that one
You’re old!
Ok, my punky-funky luthier just called - Pink’s Hot is ready. He routed the P/J to P/H.
My girlfriend is on a chicks weekend (does this involve booze and strippers???)., so I am free at last!
Tasks for this weekend:
- install battery boxes in all basses
- resolder output jacks. I have done this poorly before!
- Install the EMG PX and 35TWX in Pink’s Hot
- If I find the right epoxy: redo the pickguard for the Barney bass, ehm Ronin, to make it perfect, and put an epoxy layer on the fretless Minty fretboard. As I am new to the world of epoxy, I don’t know what to do here…
- If I get my multicolour car wrap, make the pickguard and control plate for Minty. The multicoulour wrap film apparently changes colour based on viewing angle. Let’s see…
- Install new string retainers. I tested a new model on Ronin (yeah, Ronin!) … it’s great!
You know where there’s a will, there’s a will,
Good job man. that looks custom.
Now I wish that I’d suggested the Fishman Fluence set, I’d benefit from knowing how it’s done.
You suggested it … in fact that got me started on my quest for the HH solution, so it’s ALL YOUR FAULT (again :-))
The Fishmann Fluence were more expensive here in Germany, and I did not want to do an expensive experiment, as I feel that active EMG PUs never let me down.
I’m still in total awe what the 35TWX and the EMG PJX can do.
The X variation is absolutely stunning … not as loud as the non-X EMGs (maybe even not as loud as the passive DiMarzio DP126!?) - but it has such a broad and well defined tone.
It feels … analytic!
So it’s a great foundation to EQ it to anything I like…
Very happy with that choice!
My learning from all this: you can totally f#ck up anything on the pickguard & control plate. Don’t have the right tools? No problem! Don’t have skills? So what!
Just epoxy the hell out of it and cover your shame with 3m wrap film
That wrap film is absolute magic!
@fennario - thank you for suggesting this. This was really the best input for me (except for all the PU input) and added a lot to my modding journey…
if you’re lucky
I would add… sand a lot more.
Sanding always makes things better.
I hear you!
It looks much worse in daylight. Not bad, but also not perfect.
I was impatient and just wanted to get over with it.
Also, I have some wrap film left … and the epoxy putty I have used is not the right kind. It feels like cement, not plastic.
This is why I will redo it properly: fill the holes with suitable epoxy and sand it patiently.
So I will use my time, while my girlfriend is putting euros into the elephant-themed g-strings of muscular strippers
All tasks for Pink’s Hot done!
Major change: P/J => P/H
The neck PU is an active EMG PX, the bridge PU is my favourite 35TWX . Also installed the EMG VLPF.
Very nice: I can switch between single and dual coil ond the bridge position.
The only task I had done by somebody else was the routing for the bridge PU - bummer! It was 40€ (very cheap) … and three hours discussing Techno (yeah, Techno!) with a guitar-minded punky-funky luthier…
The routing for the battery box at the back I did myself, using a drill and a dremel.
How does it sound?
ABSOLUTELY F#CKING GREAT!
First of all, this one has the LaBella flatwounds. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: I really like them!
The pickups are very good. The X variation makes a real difference, in my opinion … and switching between single and dual coil is fun (but I prefer dual coil).
Also, I noted that with the EMG GZR and the DP126 I set the bridge volume mostly to 0% - effectively making it a P bass.
With this bass I finally use both pickups, even both at 100%. It makes for a very rich tone which I like very much.
It’s different from the 2x35TWX Ronin.
Ronin is loud, a little uncivilized, in yer face (but does not need to be). I see why my girlfriend calls it the Barney bass
Pink’s Hot is like a P/J bass on steroids - everything is a little bigger (but can be very subtle too).
One more thing: yesterday I went to a hardware store to find a better epoxy solution for Ronin.
The sales guy was a … bass player. So I stayed for two hours and learned a lot about epoxy.
I now have a solution and will redo the control plates and pickguards for all three basses - and re-apply the wrap film.
Ronin will stay black, but after all the input here from manly men with big tools, I decided to make Ronin a little more gay.
Stay tuned for more…
DAF remind me a little of Ideal of Sex in der Wüste fame.
One of the worst videos ever released. I like the song WAY more than the video.
LOL!
Yeah, but I think that the videos has it’s own kind of silly coolness. I have never seen that video, but I like it. Much better than those butt-shaking makeup-overloaded videos nowadays. (Every time I say “nowadays”, I get one year older)
I haven’t heared this song since the 80s, but I remember it well, cause for some reasons, in my scene you were greeted with “Frosch unter Wasser!” (“Frog under water!”) and you answered “Sex in der Wüste!”.
Many forget that silliness was was one of the great things of the 80s underground. Very much neo-Dadaism, I think!
Some DAF silliness:
The singer, Gaby Delgado, was a very nice guy, by the way. He appeared very cool (in 80s terms), but was the most gentle person you could imagine. Very introverted, very sophisticated - somebody you would have a fine diner with and dicuss Kant, Hegel and “the arts”…
Unfortunately he died a few years ago, not long after I got to know him personally. He was about one year older than I am now when he died, so I better hurry up finishing my projects.
You never know
EDIT More silliness
Lyrics: “I wanna be a polar bear!”
Thanks for the examples @Whying_Dutchman . They put the Ideal video in context. Terrible picture quality, but I can now appreciate how it fit into the times. I was back in the U.S. by then, so didn’t experience Die Neue Deutsche Welle in person. Must have been fun times!
Here’s short live ZDF concert video of Ideal. Good stuff!
Those were great times, but you had the original/authentic NDW and then the commercial NDW.
Some tracks were great (for the time), like the ones of Ideal, Grauzone, Palais Schaumburg etc.
Others not so - I have repressed that memory.
In the 80s there were so many interesting developments, in Germany but even more in Belgium - even in the UK.
Except for mid 90s, those were the best times in music & sub culture to me.
If you want more, watch this:
There are better documentaries that show the real underground (which was very avant garde … think “Einstürzende Neubauten” etc.), but this is a good start
That’s a rights issue. I worked in TV … content is much more expensive if it is broadcasted to international regions.
EDIT: you could use a VPN! If that doesn’t work and you really want to see it - send me a private message…
