Show Us Your Basses (Part 1)

Sorry wrong thread. I meant to say returned the fender dimension bass, lol.

Whuut? Nice! It has a Warwick body shape to it, I love it. Congrats! I play mostly 6 string but sometimes I wonder if a 5 stringer is all that I need to be happy.

You sir own more basses than people own dominoes. I would have low end seizures at your place.

I’m mainly a 5-string player myself, though I have one 6 that I affectionately call The Beast (big, huge, heavy, green monster). I thought I was going to be a 6 player because ALL THE NOTES lol. Turns out I’m really happy on 5s.

I say all that because I just got a 4-string that I am enjoying terribly while considering myself a 5-string player. Turns out I play them differently, and write different types of lines on a given number of strings.

@Koldunya A 5 string would certainly be easier for me to navigate than my 6 string even though I’m used to it.

But when I pick up a 4 string bass after my 6 string bass, I absolutely rip on the 4 stringer as if it’s EZ Mode in first grade like I’m Billy Madison with cheat codes or something.

Do you play metal? I think it was your post I saw mention that you do earlier today but I could be wrong. But in-case I’m right, then how do you find those Jazz pics I saw you post for playing metal? Do they really have more attack and precision than regular picks? Been very curious about that this week.

I’ve posted more than a few picks, though I still play finger-style most of the time these days. I think it might be the Flow picks you’re referring to? (they are a Jazz III style pick but a little bigger). They’re designed with rounded edges to slide/glide off the string for fast playing. I like them a lot but wish they were grippier; they twist out of position a bit sometimes. At least, the Petrucci ones do.

@Koldunya I only use picks when I need extra clank, otherwise I’d so much rather walk my bass to the park and back again using fingers. It’s just way more comfortable for me. I only slap for fun and funk when I practice but slap bass never makes it into my mixes unfortunately. LOL!

Do you think the extra pointy Jazz picks add extra attack, precision and clank to your playing when you do use picks? They look like they do with their focused points but I never used them.

I usually just use Tortex picks but I wonder about those pointy Jazz ones since they always catch my eye at Guitar Center but I always shake it off telling myself I have enough picks but I guess you can never truly know.

I was using Nylon and Fender picks before that but I found a brighter, clankier sound with the Tortex so I’m wondering if I can get even extra clank and brightness with other picks now. The Fender picks had to go because they always would split down the middle from the point and I would constantly throw them out after they would break on me.

Offtopic, but one of my cats name is Dunya (Dunka) but after seeing “Koldunya” on paper, I will never look at that kitten the same again because she’s got a smol head and extra long limbs that are disproportionate to her body and that can only mean she’s the product of the dark arts, doesn’t it? haha

(I actually didn’t buy her, since I had more than enough cats at that point but she randomly showed up in my shed in the backyard so maybe dark arts are closer to the truth than I actually know) LOL!

Not really. They’re meant to get on/off the string as quickly/efficiently as possible.

And tbh, I like playing fingerstyle the most, too, because I can do so much expression with it. Playing with dynamics is easy, bouncing strings off the frets but not in a slap sort of way, just… clanky, but I can also switch to slap, etc.

Holy shite! Somewhere, a Guitar Center or three has empty bass walls!

Took several different basses to settle on my dream bass; the tone and feel fit me perfectly. She was a demo model from sweetwater. I just got done pulling the bushings since the threads were jacked to install the babicz bridge
