Show Us Your Basses (Part 1)

I are a schecter fanboy. My guess is you’ll have the full bug. They simply make great gear.

With the addition of the German made Hofner, the ugly duckling green one went to a new home yesterday, so goodbye little guy.

Good news is I doubled my money selling it (even with having to buy one knob that was missing. I almost thought about keeping it as a knock around bass but just have no room and got a great price for it.

These low end models are really something, and capture the ‘Hofner sound’ really well.
The German made ones have higher material grades, etc of course, and I will say the tone is much more articulate and clear. Worth the extra? Probably not, but rounds out my “Macca” duo with the Rick.

Buy low, sell high.

Nice work. Feels great to turn a profit on an instrument for sure.

I had a shiny new red Rick 4001 back in the day. Damn. Wish I’d never sold it.

Thank you, John. I didn’t really even know about bindings. But it certainly has grown on me.

The Dark Queen :crown: rises

Metallic black looks funky in person. But she’s here, with DiMarzio 60s pickups and a Darkglass tone capsule. Looks gorgeous.

Haven’t had a chance to play her yet, still at work. Just tuned up and checked intonation which is spot on.

I’m pretty happy.

Based on the electronics, looks shouldn’t even be a thing! Can’t wait to hear how you like the tone

So this arrived today just had to do it. I swapped the strings to the optima gold unique studio. It’s like piano crisps. Love the disco sparkles purple(amethyst). Never had the HH before this thing is a beast.

That must be insane with those Optimas!

First off, I like the looks. With the Anthology strap on it, the whole ambiance is understated and I really dig that. I can just picture walking into my first practice with a band, pull the DQ out and leave no one impressed, then start playing and get this big sound out. That’s a vibe I can rock.

Second, the instrument itself is wonderful to play. I picked it up and had it sitting in my office all day just adjusting, and went to my lesson and didn’t even have time to put a strap on, and had no problems with it on my lap. Which I generally do.

The body is well shaped, the contours are comfy. The neck though makes the bass. It is very thin; how they fit two carbon rods and a truss rod in it is beyond me. If this is what roasted maple feels like count me a fan. It doesn’t feel like there’s a finish on it, it is smooth and satiney.

Sweetwater’s part - they did a good job installing the pickups. The action is very low. I was doing some popping today and had a lot of clank, which I don’t mind at all. Sound of a bass being played. The intonation was nearly perfect. E is just a touch flat on the 12th fret, the other strings are perfect. So they did a good job. One thing they did which I was not expecting is they changed my blend and volume pots. I know the knobs are different, but the pots must be too. The Charvel normal has an active/passive switch by pulling out the volume, and that’s gone.

Now the electronics. I must confess I am lost. There are too many places to take the sound and I’m not sure where to go. It will take me a while to work through this. The Sixties P when everything is flat sounds much like a Fender 60s pickup. But when you start adding some bass, it has a rich, warm, fat sound. The Area J at the bridge adds the growl. Blended together, you get the rich, fat bass and crisp treble, it’s always present. You would think I’m playing chromes. With a pick you get the sound of the pick across strings like I associate with chromes. Nope, they’re flats.

Finger plucking, you get all the warmth. Picking, it’s like another bass. Drastic difference in character. Playing Breaking the law with fingers and then plucking was almost like two different songs. With the pick it would hold it’s own in a metal band, with fingers more blues rock.

Over all the treble is always complimenting the bass and it would sit in a mix very well.

The Darkglass. Turning all the knobs to full was a mistake. If a fly landed on a string it would pick it up. I have a lot of exploring to do with this thing. Right now I am running a little more bass and high mids, little less low mids and I like it. But there’s a lot you can do. I like that the treble can’t be adjusted.

Compared to the Model P/J Dimarzios. The pickups are not as hot, I had to boost the volume a bit. The Model P/J reminds me of the SPB3. The Sixties P/Area J remind me of the SPB4/SJB2 combo, with a warmer sound and less mid range (which can be fixed with the Darkglass)

At the moment, my top 3 basses are

1 Dark Queen; versatile, I can do anything with
2 Schecter Hollow Body does Hollow Body things really well. Want to do some Tame Impala
3 Charvel - Also versatile, still when I am playing some funk or ABBA (who have some killer bass lines) would really shine. When I dial back to the bridge you’d think I have a Music Man (wannabe)

The Charvel necks are killer. Also I love Dimarzios and they don’t come in soapbars :frowning: Otherwise I be upgrading pups

My goal is to get down to 5 basses, two will be Steams

Bass at 75%, low mids at 75%, high mids at 40% really rocks. The tone capsule is a beast

I do not currently have any schecters, but have had a couple. I have never picked up a schecter and not been instantly comfortable with it. One reason I sold one was cuz it eas a 5 string, and I am just not a 5 strung guy afterall.
Another, I dudnt particularly like the pre-amp, and since I hot it so cheap, It was easy to sell gor a profit rather then rip oit tge preamp and put something else in.

That P is perfect. White with black pick guard and dark fretboard.
What would Sid play?
White with black pickguard and dark fretboard.
Need nothing more.

Nice looking basses.
I had an Elite 5.
I want an Elite 4
The Elite kind of evolved into that Studio 4 you have, so I am sure it is a killer bass.
