Show Us Your Basses (Part 1)

Peter Hook bought seven Yamaha BB1200S’s the day Yamaha discontinued them. He now has several BB734A’s along with his signature BBPH. His son (the other bassist in his band, and also the Smashing Pumpkins touring bassist) has eleven BB734A’s

Makes a lot of sense to me. If I could choose I would only have two identical basses, one with rounds and the other one with flats. Preferably two P-basses.

My bass is a Squier Classic Vibe 70’s Precision . It has been completely re-wired with new 250k pots added. I also added Fender Pure Vintage ‘63 pickups and replaced the pickguard. I think it looks and sounds amazing!

They’ve actually both got flats! Just different era flats - the sunburst has La Bella 0760M, heavy duty Jamerson strings that I’ve had on for ages. The black bass has Dunlop DBFS45105, cuz I’m a Tim Lefebvre fanboy and they’re more modern, bright, and low tension for fun snappy stuff.

And I have them setup differently - the sunburst action is super high, and the black one is lower, again to be able to get more snap. And not work as hard. :stuck_out_tongue:

I’ve also swapped the necks on these two to make the sunburst truer to Jamerson’s bass, as you’ll see in a coming video!

Fun fact - that’s the only bass that I’ve named, I called it Funk Machine Jr. Jr., which is a mixed reference to Jamerson’s “Funk Machine” and also the dog “Sammy Davis Jr. Jr.” from Everything is Illuminated.

I emailed Kiesel with the B50’s serial number, and was able to get the build sheet for it. Confirmed it’s a 2009 (although the straight in-line knobs was a dead give-away for that… the B50 was released in 2009 with straight in-line knobs, but in 2010 they were updated to have a curve in the knobs), with a swamp ash body, a satin-finish maple neck with an SB headstock, and a rosewood fretboard with abalone inlays.

And I was mistaken when I said “Kiesel-made”. Carvin didn’t become Kiesel until 2015, long after this bass was made. For some reason I had it in my head that the B40s and B50s (as opposed to the B4s and B5s) were made after Carvin became Kiesel, but I was wrong. This bass is 100% pure Carvin.

So this is interesting Josh.
I had the 760M on my ‘61 P Jamerson tribute P bass and took them off because of issues down on the lower frets and went with regular 760s. For some reason JUST YESTERDAY a thought came to my head that maybe those 760Ms just need a bit higher action to behave properly down low.

Is this why you did this @JoshFossgreen ?
If so how high and why, etc?
I am thinking to go back and put the 760Ms on and bump up the action.

Arrived today… Squier Bass VI in Chicago Music Exchange’s exclusive shell pink. Took 8 months to get.
I like how CME shipped it with cardboard between the strings and fretboard so no rubbing (nice touch). Tuned it up and fiddled. Sounds good. I’ve got a bit of learning to do with it and figure out best setup, then will upgrade it with a pile of stuff I’ve been collecting for it over the past few months. Upgrades will be a weekend project in the fall maybe.

First upgrade though is this velvet pink paisley strap.

Lovely, really lovely looking bass. Maybe start out with ‘The long and winding road’

Thanks man!
Exactly where I am heading.
I looked up a few tabs for Bass VI and figure I need something easy so I can get used to:

  1. String spacing
  2. Pick in said spacing

It really does have a cool tone to it very different from a regular bass.
Interested in seeing what the Curtis Novak pickups I got for it will do to improve tone.

Very cool looking bass @John_E . Certainly worth the wait.

I’d just caution against where you might be heading.
You’ll start using a pick, it’s the same spacing as a guitar. So then it’s only a short step to buying a guitar.

Next thing you’ll start showing up late to rehearsals, haven’t learned your parts, won’t carry the gear etc…

Good news! This is wider spacing and a longer neck.
I am safe.
I cannot go down the guitar rabbit hole.
I have my sax hole.
And a piano hole that still needs further digging.

And that damn @PamPurrs with her upright double bass is making me want to dig in that hole.

I need a better shovel, or a yard made of concrete.

The bass store is closed till Sept. 6th but there are other music stores in the area so went to look around.

Spotted the Fender American Ultra, played it, it was already perfectly set up and took it home.
Now I’m gonna save up for the white one.
