Show Us Your Basses (Part 1)

The only bass in consideration right now is a Fender Marcus Miller.

It is based on the 75 Fender design that @Mac has and @Al1885 loves so much.
And although one of those would be great, I want to try out the MM first, as it is much less than a 75 Fender and gives you much more, but want to try before I buy this one.

I am in zero hurry though, as I have no more rack space for this and have nothing I want to get rid of to make room. Just something to ponder.

What more do you really need?

It’s naturally the next in my bucket list as well.

I was ready to pull the trigger on a Fender Marcus Miller a few months ago. Then I found something that did it for me a lot more.

The weight of an F Marcus Miller was a couple of pounds too much more than I ever want to wrangle.

I have never seen a Fender Jazz I would consider, weight-wise, other than the Aerodynes.

Yeah, I had an otherwise sweet mid-70s Jazz (don’t recall the exact year, too long ago). It was a boat anchor. I don’t want to mess with that kind of heft anymore, even with a Levy’s 4.5” strap. Fuggedaboutit!

It’s kind of amazing what a sweet spot the Aerodynes fill. 7lbs, sound great, and are by far the best looking Jazz basses to boot (IMO anyway). Plus, MIJ quality.

Average Jazz is 10lbs or so.

Yep. I’ve seen lighter ones up for sale, but that F Marcus Miller ain’t one of them. Mark Smith rocks his like it’s a feather-weight, but it definitely is not.

I know what that’s like. Im down from 5 to 2, a Stve Harris P and an '87 Peavey Patriot. Not counting Stingummathing, because that’s overseas and I only will use it when I’m there.

The only thing I would consider is an '80s Peavey Foundation (mahogany body and two superferrite pups in the P and J posish).

I’ve been to several music stores and pawnshops since I bought the SH-P and havent even wanted to try anything, despite nice things being there. GASsed out for now. I do have two builds on deck, but that’s for after my move.

Finally got to work on the Jazz 24 this morning. I was surprised last night to find a drop crack on the bass but I just shrugged. I sanded it out and plan to put some dark stain to match the color and probably clear coat over it or maybe just oiled it.

This is what I like
Beautiful quilted Maple top
24 frets
Active/Passive
String Through body, deliciously firm string feel and the harmonics are awesome
34.5” scale
Awesome fit and finish
Headstock logo is the same as Fender USA models.
Lightweight Hipshot ultralight tuners

What I don’t like
34.5 scale, lol. It’s just enough to feel long
Single coil pickups is a bit chatty
It could have been a pound lighter or better balance. As it stands it feels like a 10.5 lbs.

Ok here’s some pics

The before pic, fingerboard looked thirsty as heck. Little TLC on the fret feels great. Absolutely no fret sprouts.

The Jaguar CV was my first bass and I loved it. My nephew has it now so it’s still very much in the family.

Enjoy!

I love this bass. It plays nice, has a nice P sound to it with the Duncan Stinger. Been playing a lot of ZZ Top on it. Neck feels nice, body feels nice, it’s just dialed in. I did add a Fender Himass brass bridge to it.

This and my other D5 are the perfect basses for me it seems

This one is punchier and with the D"A chrome flats sounds a bit more modern, where the white one with LaBellas sounds really classic.

I am perfectly happy now. No GAS here

I play my 54P more than all the others. The True Custom pickups hits hard and has no noise or hiss. I pick it up over all the others and it can play just about any genre depending on my GT-1B preset.

Love your Sire D5s. Congrats.

Yeah I find I am playing my 50s Ps more than anything else these days. You can do anything with them it seems. I don’t know why

I’ll get my True Custom installed one of these days. The hole for the mounting screw is smaller, and the normal pickup screws don’t fit. Easy enough to get smaller screws, but I would have to toothpick the holes in the bass, and not there yet. Will be one day. Look forward to playing the pickup you love so much.
