The only thing in common is the shape of the body. Doesn’t sound like a Rick at all
I looooove the dark night finish. One of my absolute favorites
Thanks for the warm welcome everybody! I really love the Dark Knight look of the JB!
I’m looking for the perfect Batman sticker for it but it’s so pretty as is, I’m not sure I’ll be able to apply it…

SO all this talk about these gorgeous basses and one just popped up on Ebay local to me. So… I bought it. Pick it up as soon as weather allows. Very excited.
that was the deal of the month!
Great price and was in great shape too!
Thanks. As it is local pickup… no shipping cost and no duties for once. I actually have never bought a bass or guitar in Canada. All of them from Japan with the exception my Dragon’s Eye Ibanez 5er which was new and from France.
Very excited. This will be a keeper I think.
@John_E John, are you familiar with the model # of this bass. It doens’t seem to match anything in the catalog page noted above and doesn’t have the DiMarzio pickups (or does it?).
Maybe @Howard may also know.
That bass in that colour was the first bass I ever played. For the money, very hard to go wrong with the Yamaha basses. If they are good enough for John Patitucci, they are good enough for us!
This is not a Dimarzio edition.
Those pickups are quite odd anyway, SUPER HOT.
I left one set in just for kicks.
My faves in the Aero PJ are Fralins.
The stock Fender ones are ‘ok’.
(AJB or APB - for body type) - (95 or 100 or 105 or 110 for PJ/P/JJ*)(DMC - only if it is that edition, leave it off if not) (FL - for flame)(B/R/N/W/BUR - for color)
*The model numbers are screwed up, as they used 100 & 110 for the JJ config at different times, and 95 & 105 for the P at differen times, so really hard to know what the heck the PJ is, 100 or 110. I have never found a document that clears anything up.
What I think they did was…
P - 95
PJ - 100
JJ - 110
Then moved to…
P - 100
PJ - 105
JJ - 110
…most likely because some marketeer liked 3 digits for all the models. ![]()
My blue, JJ DiMarzio collection bass had all the orginal paperwork with it, and it is called simply AJB-DMC FLB
Interestingly enough, I have never seen any ad or paperwork for the non-Dimarzio collection basses.
There is a good thread on talkbass about them.
I stalked the thread and bought two of mine from people in it simply asking if they wanted to sell!
BTW @matt.g.ward.esq - ‘there is another’…
There is one unicorn Aerodyne that is the last on my list to find…
KOA special edition (AJB-G)
Sold on reverb quite a while ago.
I even messaged the seller to see if he would contact the person he sold it to and see if he would sell it, but no dice, buyer never responded.
There is also a really beat up one on a Japanese auction site thta just listed today, but it is a hot mess, no pickgurad, chunks missing, corroded metal parts, etc.
I want a pristine one.
Yes, I am familiar with this model. This is an extraordinary bass. Just look at it! I would likely buy it, put it in a molded hard case and look at it on occasion. I am sure I would noodle with it a bit but that bass is like unicorn poop.
I wonder how many were made?
BY the way, do you happen to remember the title of the thread over on TalkBass? Was it a general Aerodyne thread, as I know that thread well? Or a specific thread for the Pbass version of the Aero?
Thanks for all the help!
I knew exactly when you bought it, as I got the notification lol.
Sorry @John_E like I said just a day too late, lol.
I’m sure glad that it was one of us who gets it.
AH! Well, I have been exactly where you are at. Quite a few times actually and especially with Yahoo Auction in Japan. I often find a bass, tell myself I am going to buy it no matter what, research about, read reviews of it… then with 5 minutes to close on the Auction all hell breaks loose and someone or several people bid the bass WAY past my justifiable budget.
It is a painful thing but I have come to realize there are always other basses.
Sorry you missed it but so happy I got it. If it wasn’t so close I wouldn’t have bought it.
Congrats man. @John_E sent me the link on the day I took delivery of the SB-1. If not I’d been all over it. Funny thing was each time he sent me a great find I just literally pick up another bass, lol.
Now next time before I pick up another bass I’m gonna think which Aerodyne I’d be missing out.
I can tell you they sound and feel nice. I haven’t played a Rick before so no opinion, but it sounds better than my Samick and 60’s Classic Vibe P Bass. I’ll do a cover with it shortly.
Not 100% sure, but it looks like an Aerodyne Classic Precision Special to me, which I would guess would be APB-100, but I see them (with P bodies like that) listed as AJB-100 too. Fender is weird. I am not a Fender expert.
Weirdly, even Sweetwater had them.
BTW DiMarzio’s were my favoite of a bunch of P pickups I researched while picking one. I swapped the P in my Hybrid II out to a DiMarzio Model P. Sounds fantastic and bright with the alder body. Perfect for driving, aggressive picking ![]()
What does it sound like? (I have no interest in buying one FYI) It does seem like an insanely cheap price though.
This is not a Dimarzio edition.
Those pickups are quite odd anyway, SUPER HOT.
Well, yes. Ceramic pickups are hotter. It’s not that they are odd, it’s that they are working as intended ![]()
I love them myself.
