100% looks and color for my first and second bass.
Although, the second bass I got was a brand that I saw Pearl Jam’s bassist (Jeff Ament) do an ad for, so that was a secondary silly factor.
Do it.

I like how each one of your basses is so different, and they all look so awesome! That cobalt blue Dingwall looks stunningly beautiful.
Yeah was gonna say, it’s one of my favorite colors.
Well, I bought this one from Reverb without even having the opportunity to play it simply because I liked the way it looked.
I bought one of these from a forum member and paid to have it shipped from Japan because LOOK AT THIS THING!!!
(Not the actual one I got, and this picture doesn’t properly show off the sparkly paint, but you get the idea.)
“I’ve noodled on guitar for 30 years without really learning much, maybe bass will be better”
This was my first bass and I used that reasoning to justify the purchase. I never really bonded with it though so it wasn’t long before it got traded in.
3 times music man has come out with a rare limited edition color, dargie delight. who is dargie? a guy on the music man forums who once argued that “green basses never sell” ![]()
Love love love the SBV’s.
It also has some of the best sounding stock pickups I have ever heard (assuming you like punchy, aggressive styles).
Yeah. That’s why it gets played regularly. Great tone.
But I’d be lying if I said that was the reason I bought it, and not because it’s gorgeous and unique (here).
Yup ![]()
Next thread, silliest reason for building a bass.
In my case it has been because I have spare parts (eg pickups or body), I have also built rifles based on this and know people who have built rifles because they have a spare set of dies.
Yup. Well, bought, not built, but yes. 9.3x62.
I tend to mod stocks sometimes too.
I think I had some .303 parts and somehow I ended up with a sporterised Jungle carbine and modded some synthetic stocks to fit, including making a pistolgrip for it.
No reason on earth is feeble enough when looking for a new guitar. ![]()
Nope, not ever

Colours, some look very cool and it motivates me more to interact with something that looks colourful/more fun
That being said I own one very basic black and white bass xD
St. Patrick’s Day will be over soon but the green is always there.
I like phat strings!
