I wonder if part of it is the placement of the pickup so close to the neck. It’s still crisp though.

The tones I get using Tone Central through the Boss GT1-B are sublime. Whatever tone I want, I can conjure up. I set it on the tight and bright preset, roll off the highs with Bass tone control. Great tone with no string noise. And it works for 99% of what I want to play. Need some dirt, just roll it in through the Boss. After shimming the neck with the .25 wood shim from StewMac, the action is perfect and it plays like butter. I know the builder uses really good tone controls when he builds them.
