I’m mid way through Module 11, and closing in on module 13, where we learn slap. I’ve only got an acoustic/electric bass at this point (planning to reward myself after 6 months of successful bass newbness with an electric). My question is: should I attempt the slap module with my current acousting/electric bass? Or will it just result in crappy sound and potentially lead to learning incorrectly? I can always come back to this module in December when I ‘reward’ myself with an electric. Advice is much appreciated.
I’ve tried slapping on my acoustic and it’s somewhat more difficult. Acoustics tend to have a higher action so you have to hit it A LOT harder and even then it’s still not going to sound the same.
That being said, the technique will still translate to electric so I say go for it. Just keep reminding yourself that it’s just not going to sound like you think it will supposed to and that’s okay.
I’d skipped the slapping until you get your electric bass. Slapping on an acoustic bass would produce dull and deadened tone, which is not necessarily a bad thing if that’s what you are going for, but since it’s your first go at it why not come back to this later.
+1 to this.
You could push on through with slap on the bass you have, but it would make it way harder and way less rewarding than trying on a decent electric.
I say wait. You might even join up with camp @Barney … you never know!
