Slapping with a hypermobile thumb

Hey everyone, I was wondering if anyone else has had any experience when playing slap with a parallel thumb?

I’ve always played thumb down slap in the past since I learned by emulating Flea, but recently have wanted to try and play with my thumb parallel to push my capabilities and open up techniques like double thumbing.

However, the guides I’ve seen say to hold your hand as if you’re hitch hiking, so in a thumbs up position, and then drive the slapping from your wrist. My thumb is hyper mobile, and so although I can get into this position, if I tense my hand at all (say when I’m about to pop) it actually pops my thumb further back and pushes the joint where it connects to my hand forward towards my palm. This makes it very awkward to slap and I end up having to hold my wrist in a very weird position to make it work.

I’m trying my best to get used to the ideal position and seeing if I can maintain it whilst playing, but I was wondering if anyone else had ever had this issue and had any tips on dealing with it? Even some reassurance that I can eventually overcome it with practise would be reassuring, as it feels a bit futile at the moment!

Thanks in advance for any advice!

Well double jointed or not you can just point your thumb straight to maximize the angle, only in the beginning as you master your slapping it doesn’t matter where it points.
