Some thoughts for Bass n00bs

I’m impressed. We usually just save these stories for Country songs.

We also have a song about a guy in prison with a secret family gravy recipe, they are even making it into a movie.

That actually sounds like the plot of an Icelandic Saga.

Frankly that sounds more Canadian than American.

That was me back in my band days… I got lucky… and yes LEARNED A LOT from the guys. That situation can be scary too tho…

We were a working band… and I was n00b AF … too many F-ups can lead to tension.

For the most part they were cool about it though.

Back to the N00b thing.
I was playing some Van Morrison songs lately, while playing Moondance I thought it was a great song for everyone but especially a great newer player song.
It has a steady and not complicated rhythm along with predictable patterns and best of all the position changes are almost every bar.
When learning the song you need to see the notes or tabs which makes it almost impossible to look at the fret board at the same time, this becomes a good thing in not a very long time.
This type of song even practiced at a slower speed can quickly help a player learn to move more relaxed and freely while opening up the fret board for easier and faster exploration.
Practice can start to sound the same over and over again when a player gets stuck in the same area of the board.
One of the bass channels used the term, unlocking the fretboard.
Sometimes practice may not be the tunes you like the most, but the tunes or exercises that take you a step up.

Figured I’d drop this as an addendum to your comment

So far I am really enjoying it… patch editing isn’t difficult … and I only glanced at the manual, so the unit is very intuitive  The stock patches offer a HUGE range of variety… from stock tones to uber wacky and bizarre :stuck_out_tongue: On board tuner and Looper… and DAI… I call it a win :stuck_out_tongue:

The Michael McDonald track is excellent, that guy did great songs outside of the Doobie Brothers and the horn section was tops… :jbass: :sunglasses:

I think Moondance even if a player needs to slow it down by 50% or more is a tune where much growth can come from.
It really helps with getting around the board. :jbass: :sunglasses:

Moondance is pretty simple, straightforward walking blues. Nothing complex. It’s easy to play and worthwhile to know.

Amen…

This is why for over 40 years I was invited to join many bands and why I can still walk into a sub role and allow a band to keep a previously booked gig even when they’ve just lost their bassist.

It’s all about knowing your job and being able to get it done professionally in workman like fashion. You don’t need a Michelangelo to paint the living room in your home.

Though my cognitive science professor had “The Creation of Adam” painted on the ceiling of his living room. He did it himself.
Through to be told, he was kind of on many ends of the spectrum … a most fascinating personality…
