Hi Brian,
both sound fantastic and for some reason I love watching your fretting hand! Something very elegant about it. Also love your groove and how youāre into it. Can totally picture you on stage.
And thank you for sharing both versions. I wouldnāt be able to decide which one I like better either. Iāve started contemplating whether my next bass should be a J or P bass and itās great to have such a good comparison.
Great job on these! I wish I had long fingers like you do! Iām a Jazz bass man, but on these recordings I think the P-Bass sounds closer to the original, so prefer that one.
@TNKA36 Nice! Agreeing with Regina that those serve as a good P and J bass comparison.
Dunno if youāre aware of this, but I canāt watch the Quicktime (.mov) videos on Firefox, so I had to open the videos in Chrome. Based on quick googling seems to be that itās because of the encoding (not mp4), so using other file format/encoding could be a thing you could consider in future uploads
Weāve actually had 13 submissions so far! Thatās awesome! Iām planning on doing mine this weekend and I know a few others are. Out of curiosity, are there any people doing this challenge that arenāt doing a video? Thatās perfectly fine, Iām just curious.
Just checked them out, Brian @TNKA36 . . . well done!
Although Iām a J-Bass fan, I think I liked the tone on your P-Bass better
(either way, both basses are sweet . . . real collector items )
Cheers
Joe
Beautiful covers. The 2nd one sounded like it had some kind of phasing here and there. Are you using our backing tracks?
I also like those detailed credits with the bass and string info you leave at the end.
As always you look very relaxed and in the words of @Regina, very elegant while playing.
Very nice @JT,
I thought I was listening to the original
Cheers Brian
Hi @Regina , @JT, @kowry, @Jazzbass19, @gcancella,
Thanks for the feedback,
I thought it was important to participate with everyone on the forum that has had a go at this first song.
Thanks @JT for your drive in getting it up and going, this type of participation encourages everyone to jump on board, we all learn by motivating each other to strive to be better players.
Thanks for the sheet music for 4 + 5 string @gcancella,
This makes it easier for everyone to participate, great effort to everyone who has been involved.
Cheers Brian
Hi @gcancella,
Iām not using any backing tracks on either, I recorded against the original track using garageband, just wiped the bass track out and recorded against the restš
I did use the transcribed music you put up
Cheers Brian
Canāt really take credit for this one, 4 string is Joshās and 5 string adaptation was done by Enkhiel. But Iām glad you found it useful!
Ye @JT I think I will be doing it and not recording. Im going to start next week⦠When I move I think I may start recording then more room and a techie boyfriend lol
This is such a great idea and thread @JT . Itās great watching all of these covers. I just ran through the song again myself last night a few times. Maybe this is a tip or trick, and has undoubtedly been talked about before, but for me (no equipment guy) I played the song on a decent speaker, and then practiced without an amp. That helped with the timing and being able to hear the original bass line, and then I turned my amp volume up. My play through was not perfect, still a few mistakes here and there, but it was perfectly cromulent.
Also @TK-421 wins the best forum name award me thinksā¦
@Regina your next bass should be ⦠one of each!
my next will most likely be a MM!!
These are both GREAT! Well done!
I am leaning more and more P bass the more I play mine.
Thanks @John_E,
The MMās are really nice, mine has a really smooth neck and your fingers just glide real smooth,
i might use it on the next cover,
Cheers Brian
Hey Brian!
Two great covers as usual. I loved the comparison with the P and J basses. Glad to see youāre joining the challenge.
Just getting started. I am excited as this was perfect timing for me. I havenāt been practicing and I was hoping for inspiration. This could be the structure I needed. I will be behind at first and on music row this weekend. Video will have to wait till I catch up. Thanks so very much for the challenge. If I donāt practice then I will be letting everyone involved down. Thatās key.
Wow, so many great covers already. Every time another one gets posted I get more nervous about having to post mine!
I wonāt comment on them individually because iām just not experienced enough, but I will say that they are all terrific and I think everyone deserves a big for giving it a go!
Okay, so this is my first cover ever! Took me a few goes to get the video and audio in one take but I think this is as good as I can get it.
The bass is a Yamaha TRBX174EW, straight into my Behringer UMC22, then into GarageBand, put it all together in imovie.
Cheers Brendan
Hey @Regina,
They are both great basses, and again it comes down to what type of sound you want.
If you have small hands the J-bass would probably be a better fit as itās got a narrower neck on it, and it has the front and rear pick ups that can give more options as opposed to the fatter neck on the P-bass and the single pick ups.
I would try both and then make my decision based on what feels comfortable in your hands.
My J-bass is a lot heavier than the P-bass, not sure if itās due to it being older and pre CBS.
Hope this helps you when you choose what you want.
Cheers Brian
