Song 18 - "Don't Stop Believin'" by Journey

Hi everybody  Is it just me or is this song tricky? I seem to manage to keep tempo in my head without music, but as I try to play with the music I lose it. Guess it probably is because I’m not good enough, and that I need to know the song by heart, so I can lead the music or something like that. But still I have some problems here. Hope to upload in a week or so, or at least before Christmas.

It’s tricky, and it’s looooooooooong. I haven’t gotten this one yet!

OK, I think I need some help to get this one right. I can feel the song when I hear it, but I don’t think I perform it very well. Also, I found out after I learned it with plucking that it should be played with a pick. I really hope you good people could tell me what I can do better.

I’m just going to paste in my description from the video. It sums it up nicely.

I’m not proud of this recording because there are a lot of issues with it. My playing isn’t the best, but this is probably take 10. I was tired. EXCUSES!

The quality of the recording also. This is a new bass and this is the 2nd time I record with it. I’m still figuring it out. I never noticed all the neck noise with string hits, buzzes, and thumps. There must be a setting I can change in Resolve. Again, still learning.
So this is my offering. I’ll likely revisit one day and replace this but for now, I hope you enjoy.

Great job to do this song, it can be tricky. You can always go back and redo this someday, then you maybe can try with a pick.

I have yet to play any song with a pick. I’ve read this song sounds good with a pick so maybe I’ll use this one as a learning tool!

I dunno, I thought you did a really nice job playing overall.
Your bass sounded like it was on a phaser or under water though, very muwah muwah and phasey. I was going to ask you what effect you used.

This is a deceptively tricky song and I liked your playing a lot.

Remember - first rule of the covers is to not bash thyself.

It should be played any way you wish as long as it sounds good.
I think your bass is a bit too low in the mix and hard to really hear any bad playing - unless of course there isn’t any.
Maybe you are chasing a sound vs. a good performance (that you actually have).

Thanks John. That’s encouraging.

I think all I had was a chorus pedal I added when editing. I was trying to get that gritty sound in the original, but after getting some great input on another thread my recordings with the Geddy Jazz sound much better.

Wow, you guys weren’t kidding. I learned this one early on in the B2B lessons and regularly play it during practice. You know where this is going…

I went into recording it with a big head and got stomped! Each mistake made the next attempt worse and worse lol.

Thankful for the comments and videos on here :slightly_smiling_face: really helps with progressing through the challenge.

This song is actually the reason why I started to learn the bass.

Fantastic job @Buzzin_Canada-John - really!

Chorus (obviously a bit heavy) + a small bit of delay + mids on EQ boosted a bit + a splash of reverb.

Thanks, glad you enjoyed it
