Song 24 - "Lady Marmalade" by Patti Labelle

This is a really fun one to play. Quite underrated I think as it isn’t something I’d have thought of trying to learn.

The main riff is tricky as it climbs through the 4 strings. While practising, if I dug one of my fingers in a little too hard it would get caught and mess up the rest of the timing, but I managed to avoid that when I recorded.

You did great! I agree with you - this one wouldn’t have been on my list if it wasn’t for the list.
We just recorded this one as well.

Awesome job- in all its p-bass glory!!

Really great job! Sounded awesome :slightly_smiling_face:

My turn my turn! lol

Here’s my version of #24 - Lady Marmalade.

Way fun to record this one! Definitely got me moving around. We added a green screen to the family room to give us a few more recording options. This was our first attempt and we must have missed something on setup. My left elbow and the far right side of the headstock go off the screen a few times so we did some creative framing with it. :slightly_smiling_face:

Side note - I wrote about this isolated track on my index if anyone’s interested. Basically, “Should I use the compressor in DAW in addition to my pedal?”. The answer is yes!

@Professor and @THRILLHO good stuff :slight_smile:

and your saying there is no such thing as to much compression ehh :þ

Thanks! On to the next one(s)!

Thank you! Yes, I’ll continue to compress the compressor until I create a black hole from too much pressure. LOL

I’m struggling to play London Calling cleanly so I think it might be a while.

I have a few in my queue - I’m still working on Higher and Higher. lol

We’ll get there. :slightly_smiling_face:

well played 100%.

Not loving the tone though, deeper would sound funkier.

Thanks for the feedback. It’s a fun song to play!

I’m trying to figure out how to “properly hear” what the track actually sounds like in the mix before I export it.

I started out using the laptop speaker. That didn’t work. Then I started using a little Bose desktop set with a sub. That mostly works until I either turn the bass up or get aggressive. I’m now using a monitor headset - Audio-Technica ATH-M50X.

My bass sounds great in that headset, but it doesn’t always translate to my TV sound system when I stream on YouTube.

Yep! You have to find that weird balance between the two. One way to try it is to get the mix right on the headphones, export the audio file, then listen on phone/laptop speakers to see if you need to boost the bass. You might end up having a little more bass through headphones/good monitors than you like - but it will be more balanced across other listening devices.

Seems like you are having fun and continuously improving on bass/the recording process! There is always something new to learn :slightly_smiling_face:

Yes! Having fun for sure. This is a hobby that combines a few of my other hobbies/interests all into one with new stuff to learn all the time. And if that wasn’t enough, add in the shared experience and collaboration with my son, and I’m just over the moon. lol

I’ve met new and interesting people to play music with all because of this course. My latest group wants to work on a setlist for local gigs. I’m in! I have no clue where this will actually go, but i’m certainly enjoying the ride. :slightly_smiling_face:

Sony bother trying to optimize for a phone. Phones are optimized for voice not bass. One of the best places to check your mix is in your car.

I understand that and agree some devices will not provide a good bass experience, but since he is posting videos to YouTube there is a good chance some of his viewers will be on mobile. It’s worth giving it a listen ahead of time.

I can confirm that the majority of my viewers are on mobile. lol
