Song 4 - "Folsom Prison Blues" by Johnny Cash

Video not viewable, says it is marked private.

Hmm, that’s odd. Someone has already viewed it. I suppose I could repost it.

FYI this tune is about a 1/4 step out of tune (see the many comments above), which you may have said ‘why does this sound not quite right, almost 1/4 step not quite right’ - lol.

aside from falling for that trap, fairly good playing.

this is a tough one as it is slow, out of tune, and…speeds up just a tad all the way through. You were on the groove when it started but got ahead a bit as the song sneakily sped up which made you go faster without even knowing it, and a bit too fast.

most of us got caught up on this mess btw.

Great finger position btw, wish i was that clean.

Hi Talva,

Nice job overall expect one very important miss.

You are playing all the notes steccato (short, with pauses between them all), yet the music calls for them to be legato (one note directly to the next). If the notes were to be played steccato, they would all have a dot above or below them.

This greatly changes the way the bassline groove sounds. That said, you can play any song any way you want to, however, for these challenge songs, Josh has picked them all for very specific reasons as they all teach something different. Go back and listen to the bass line on yours vs. the original and you should hear the difference.

Keep on going, you are doing great! (nice bass too).

Hi John,

Thanks so much for your very interesting and relevant feedback!

That was the intended effect; I didn’t really like the version that was offered, a bit boring for my taste. I adapted a cover I found on the live version at Folsom.
(bass cover by Harry)

However, I’m going to try doing another take without the staccato; it will be interesting to listen to both!

A take played differently, without staccato.
It’s not easy to change when you’re used to playing it a certain way!

Awesome, knowing the difference is 1/2 the battle…

This song is one I really struggled with as I have been learning it for ages. I recorded today, and I know things are off with some timing and note lengths. I will go back to this one in the future, but for now, I feel I need to leave this one behind for my sanity.

unfortunately your timing is way off.

If you feel stuck, skip it and wait if you get frustrated in playing something. No real sense in doing it wrong so much, you are only practicing mistakes.

That all said, you got on the beat a few times but overall not really, way too ahead of the beat in general. The added trickiness to this song is it slowly speeds up a bit making you want to speed up too. A simple song that is hard to play. Keep at it!

Yep, very disappointed in this one. But still wanted to share it to show it’s not all a bed of roses. And if it was easy, everyone would be doing it. this is my first real set back.

You know, that’s a really fair point. Obviously we love to share our successes here and celebrate everyone else’s too. But those successes come after hard work, and while non-musicians don’t need to see how the sausage is made, there’s no shame in sharing our struggles with each other here.

The important thing is to learn from it, pick yourself up, and keep moving. And it looks like you’re doing exactly that. A great example of how to struggle gracefully.

By the way, those black strings look real hot on that bass.

I am on the same train that we hear coming that @Mktony32 with this song, I’ll practice the next one because I am going crazy

Here is my version

Seems easy but it is quite difficult to maintain the rythm during all the song. Let’s go for the next one!!!

I’m paying attention here as I’m planning to record this one over the weekend. It seems like the tempo of the recording is shifting!

Sounds good and in tune. I had tuning issues when I ran through it last night. Is it standard tuning?

Great great tone!

Rushing the beat quite a bit here, need to lay back just a bit more to get in the right pocket. If you have a DAW, and are separating the tracks out, have a look at your bass track and the original - this is the easiest way to visually see where you are vs. where the bass should be in the groove. It can be quite shocking how off we play at times.

Well done otherwise, keep at it!

Hello @Professor yes it is the standard tuning.

@John_E That’s a good idea! I’ll check both tracks in the DAW (if I figure out how ) to find the differences. I found it harder to keep rhythm in the solo guitar than in the singing part.

Thanks all for your comments!!!
