Well done @KaiserSoze !
Good day, all! Song #4 of the challenge. I felt the Martin was best suited for this one - which let to an acoustic (mostly) day of covers. ![]()
I had to futz with tuning a bit, but I’m happy enough with the final result to move on.
Johnny Cash - Folsom Prison Blues (Bass cover)
Well done again! This time bass is a bit low in the mix to hear clearly - or - you are just meshing in with the song so well!
Perfect groove! Great job!
Great job @Professor !
In fact the tempo varies throughout the song, you really have to listen, you can’t rely on a metronome or other fixed element. It makes the song quite complicated. This is also the case for bad moon rising to a lesser extent.
explains alot, just started to work on this one, and I am having problems with keeping the groove in this, drums also very muddy
edit: also a question, about note length, cos as written its long notes, impossible to hear from original song, but should they be short or long ?
100%, the train keeps a rollin faster as the song goes on.
We discussed this a little earlier. Josh’s tab says long
, some play it short ![]()
I think short-ish. Not staccato, but not full length either.
My interpretation is similar to Bad Moon Rising. Bum bum bum - not bm bm bm or buum buum buum.
I found a groove with the train sound. lol
@talva and @Professor thank you

Here is mine! An easy song to play, but I had a hard time keeping up with the increasing timing, so it took me a little more practice, but I think I got it at the end.
Great job with the timing and hitting all the right notes! The thing with this song is not only do you need to pay attention to the changing tempo, you also have to pay attention to the articulation. The notes should have a slight pause between them. Not legato, but not staccato either. Instead, somewhere in between.
Think bum bum bum bum with a small pause between. Not buuummbuuummbuummbuumm or bm bm bm bm. I hope this makes sense.
Again, great job.
But now that you have a few songs recorded, it’s time to start paying attention to the details. ![]()
Hi @Professor, Thank you for the feed back.
Yeah, listening back to it, I kind of agree. The thing was that I feel like the sound comes from the fact that the original track was with an upright bass, which with the mixing gives off that sound. But I don’t have an upright bass, and the provided notation writes the notes as legato, so I wasn’t sure what to do and I decided to simply play the song the way I did by going with the flow. I agree thought that I could have pulled off my fingers to shorten the notes a little to give them more of a swing feel and not focus so much on connecting them.
You’re welcome. You’re doing great - you have the basics under control. Like I said, this is small detail. Now that you have the fundamentals down, you can start listening for the details. ![]()
Nice job
You are rushing the beat throughout the song. The bass does drive the tune forward but you are a bit out in front of the train vs. up in the engine car. This is really easy to do on this song as it gets quicker as it goes, but, you were rushing out of the gate.
Is your tone rolled all the way off? If not it should be, and I would lean on the neck pickup to get rid of that twang and you will sound more like the upright.
I do disagree with @Professor on staccato vs. legato as these notes are legato all the way, but, your twang in your tone doesn’t let the note sort of drop a bit from one muddy thump to another.
Thank you so much for your feed back!!
I think I’m maybe trying to do the challenges a little bit too fast. I knew the first three songs before I stated filming them, so the videos were quick to do, but I was unfamiliar with this one, but I kept up the pace even so. Kind of ironic writing this just after I finished filming the 5th one in which I think I’m a little dragging, but I will try taking more of my time going forward and make better covers.
To be honest, I had TOTALLY forgot about the tone knob. I had set all the volume on the neck pickup, but I was only trying to dial in the tone with pedals, mainly an EQ one. Your advice helped me a lot with the AC/DC tone too!
Mine! I used the bassless file in the Google Drive for backing. JT’s old post on the off tuning was worth its weight in gold but much like noticing your own breathing, it’s impossible not to constantly feel you’re playing ‘off’ when you KNOW you’re hitting the right intervals.
Not quite staccato, not quite legato, not quite the right tuning, and not quite the same tempo, yet I spent my whole life thinking this would be a simple one once I got around to it. It isn’t, and that’s not to mention I’m not doing the fun walkups you can hear in the live version/omitted from the song pack notation.
Bonus: tone rolled off, neck pickup only. Sounds like porridge in isolation but that seems to be what the recipe called for.
Something is very off with your tuning vs. the song here still.
IIRC, tuning was off a 1/4 step or something, but I also feel like i am hearing wrong notes altogether here.
Thanks for the second pair of ears on it! I futzed around with the tuning again and this time played it in C# instead of the suggested C in the song pack notation.
I vaguely remember the lesson suggesting that this is a good ‘finger roll’ song, and it is, but with the string crossing I was kinda just mixing it up with different ways of fretting it to give the index a break. Not sure if that’s the start of a bad habit or not?
