This one is just a looping 8 bars of a I-vi-IV-V progression. I think it’s a great early one-finger-per-fret exercise if you’re playing it in fourth position. It also revealed a habit of mine whereby I’d ‘tap’ a plucked string near the pickup to mute it on rests. This helps to keep my own time with sparse drumming like this track, but it also shows up very prominently when mixing. I think I got it under control in this take. Great job on this, great playing. You’re rushing to be a little bit though instead of laying back a little bit and feeling the groove. But you’re playing is really good otherwise. The tones, a little Burpee and on the treble side versus trying to emulate the upright that was on the original, but that can certainly be a creative choice as well. It all depends on what you’re going for. Overall, great job.
Thanks - good ear! There’s moments mentally where my brain is tracking things like, ‘OK, that was the fourth bar of the A, time to move to the F#’, which is probably where the rushing comes in. Still, it’s nice to have something that is just the one part the whole way through.
I hadn’t adjusted my tone from my previous Bad Moon Rising take - I thought the treble helped it stay a bit more distinct (for feedback on my playing), especially when the rest of the band really gets going about 1m 50s in. Definitely something I’ll keep in mind going forward.
I had some difficulties on the first notes because I didn’t want to learn how to put on clicks in, so I just checked the sound wave on Reaper. The tone is also not perfect, but I think I did OK for the rest.
I just let the first bar play out before joining in and tried to make up for it with a more complete ‘outro’ instead of the fade-out haha. Good idea with the reading the sound wave though, I’ll have to try that on the next song I get that has no lead-in.
I like your tone, but then again, I’m more focused on just having my fingers be in the right place at the right time.
Does anyone have any suggestions for replicating upright bass tone on some of these older songs? I find it’s real easy to have it sound like mud, which actually can help it sit better in the mix but isn’t really what I think anyone wants for a practice/feedback cover.
