Strap Alternative That Does Not Lay Across The Spine?

I have an issue on my back, right where the strap crossed my spine. Until this issue popped up (literally) the wide leather straps I got for both my basses were working great.

Until I can get this issue dealt with (most likely surgery) I need to find an alternative. Or continue to be distracted with pain while I practice. I’m a huge wuss so not a fan of that idea if there’s an alternative out there.

There are some alternative designs. This one is by Gruv Gear and I have liked their stuff so far

Thank you for showing me this. I took a look at it on the site. I may still get one if the current straps don’t help once the issue on my back is gone. Unfortunately it still crosses the spine right across the area I’m trying to avoid.

This is a totally no-strap solution, but it is definitely pricey. Joe Dart uses one on occasion, as did Prince sometimes.

This is almost perfect. I just showed this and the one @skydvr shared and he’s working on engineering one for me.

You know, if I ever get to the point where I can’t stand any pressure on my neck/shoulders this is worth the investment.

Or I hire my welder niece to fabricate one.

There’s a guy in a band here who uses a stage stand that holds the entire instrument up. You can see it here:

He’s a top tier guitarist (he was in Babymetal’s original backing band and his current band, Unlucky Morpheus, is amazing) but he hurt his hand and this helps him still have a career.

Here’s a solution that would very likely work for you. It’s a waist strap without shoulders or back required.

I’m sure I’ve seen Dave Gilmour using one like that when he needed to play two different guitars on the same number on stage; one electric and one acoustic. Might have been Wish You Were Here with acoustic on the intro.

Steve Howe has used one for years for Roundabout. Kansas also used it in the 70s as I recall

Wish You Were Here is all acoustic, but it is six string and twelve string in parts

steve albini used a custom made waist strap. a few of his other band mates adapted it too.

this might have been because his 14 lb body couldn’t support a 7 lb guitar :expressionless:

Well on the bright side that issue got dealt with a lot sooner than I had hoped. Not so bright side was it involved it becoming a lot worse in the course of a couple days and having to get the advice nurse involved because I felt like the doc wasn’t moving fast enough (US healthcare, amiright?). Ah well, it’s about the healing now.

I might still look into a couple of those other strap options to distribute the weight across both shoulders though.

excellent news, get better.

Thank you. I already feel a lot better. Using a small beanbag to support the bottom of the bass when I practice and moved the strap down a bit for now to keep it supported. I honestly thought it was going to be weeks before it was dealt with when I started this post, not days.
