Strings for BB534

I’ve decided on the Yamaha BB434 any suggestions on strings and does using the string though the body make a difference.

Thanks

I haven’t had an issue with regular long scale strings and stringing thru the body on my BB434M. It may be dependent on the brand of strings though. I mostly used D’Addario strings (NYXL’s). Elixirs will work fine too.

Yamaha BB basses are very flats friendly.
They will tame those unnecessary high frequencies.

Saw your other thread about wanting to record Soul and RnB so yeah you want flats. Though most here seems to recommend LaBellas., Thomastic-Infeld long scale flats will string thru the body on BB434. I’ve never used LaBellas so can’t speak to them.

I’ve read flats can last for years. Any specific ones you would suggest

I like the Ken Smith brand, however, any decent brand will work.

Thomastic-Infeld JF344 Jazz Flatwounds. They’re pricey but are great strings. Very smooth and low tension. In general many flatwounds players don’t replace them until they break which typically takes years.

Get the bass first. Spend some time practicing with it for a bit. Get some experience.

Then worry about strings.

Agree. The strings that come on Yamahas are great. Learn on rounds. Flats can mask muting technique issues while learning.

:100: this and I wouldn’t worry about TI flats right out of the gate. They’re about double the cost of other quality flats. I would decide that you like flats before throwing down almost a Franklin on them.

I forgot to mention - I sell strings

:100: - the strings it comes with are actually very good (D’Addario EXL’s, many peoples’ strings of choice). They are the least of your worries right out of the gate.

The 434 isn’t entry level, it’s a solid midrange bass. You’re buying an excellent instrument that is high quality (better than many Fenders) and will last years. Just give it a whirl for a while before you think of changing anything.

Those are not unnecessary, brightness nicely rounds out the tone for many genres

And even if they were, that’s what the tone knob does too.

Yup. I picked up a used one a while back, because I wanted something inexpensive and robust enough to not feel bad about making it live in the harsh environment of the brewery. But also nice to enjoy playing.

The build quality on the 434 is incredible. The neck is great.

Fantastic pickups too, right out of the box.
