Struggling to Find the Right Clean Tone on Zoom B1X Four

Hey everyone,

I recently got a Zoom B1X Four to improve my practice sessions, but I’ve been struggling to find the right tone. I’m looking for a clean sound, somewhat jazz-like, but not too harsh or fatiguing when playing with headphones.

I’ve tried tweaking different patches and EQ settings, but nothing seems to hit the sweet spot. It’s getting pretty frustrating because I expected this to make my practice sessions better, not more difficult.

Does anyone have recommendations for specific settings, effects, or patches that could help me achieve a smoother, more natural clean tone?

Thanks in advance!

So is the idea that you don’t want an amp or cab sim coloring the sound? You could set up a patch with just a compressor, or maybe even an empty patch? I don’t recall if an empty one is possible. What about turning off the components of a particular patch? I think that was a thing - if you turn off all the components, would it just act as a passthrough?

I always thought the Hard Comp preset was pretty good. That was my go to, when I was using the B1four a lot.

I always found the best way to use the Zooms was to just ignore the factory patches completely (most are garbage) and make your own pedal chains in Stomp Mode. YMMV.

The one I use most often at home is with a noise gate and compressor.
When I am playing with others, I will sometimes use other patches or ones I have put together

Have you watched this video?

Not sure this is where you are going, but thought it might help if you haven’t seen it.

I like the Mark802 preset for this kind of sound. I used it “as is” on my recent Chicago cover

It’s been a while for me @John_Ej but the amp effects were up in the 40’s I think.

I found chosing a clean head and either removing or finding a cab I liked got an ok sound. :man_shrugging:

You can toggle on off and change all the effects / cabs / amps using the controls.

No need to plug it into a computer.
