Stupid question - What exactly is chugging?

Hi there,
I just started module 4 and the first lesson talks about chugging.

What exactly does chugging mean? Is it just playing eight notes in a steady rhythm? Or is there more to it? This is probably a very naive question but I want to avoid misunderstanding basic concepts.

Thank you! :slightly_smiling_face:

8th or 16th for long passages, quickly. Steady or in a “galloping like” fashion ala Iron Maiden etc.
It’s more about the repetitiveness over time and keeping consistent time.

all that chugging and never a choo choo; what a disappointment :worried:

Nothing is naive if you’re serious about learning, @Snoopy

@john_E 's answer is a good one.

Thanks a lot, guys!
I also looked up „to chug“ in the dictionary and there it says chugging like a train…chucka-chucka-chucka…

Makes sense.

Another explanation that I like very mucho: To chug beer = to drink fast.

I will practice chugging the next time and get me some beers as fuel to keep going! Yaaaay!:beer::beer:

Also: It really is fun to make choo-choo noises while practicing chugging along with Josh! :joy:

Yes…I am easily entertained…chooooo-choooo…next stop: The Trooper by Iron Maiden! :joy::joy::joy:

Listen to a song like Breaking the Law by Judas Priest. Ian chugs away on the same note for long stretches

Breaking the law, breaking the law! Chooo-chooo! :+1:

Is this really considered “chugging”? I think of it more like a lot of U2 or AC/DC’s lines - steady 8th notes. Steady 16th I can see, but is something asymmetric like a Steve Harris gallop still considered “chugging”?

The only naive of stupid question is the one not asked. :slightly_smiling_face:

I’ve heard other instructors call it ‘peddalling’ as well.

No idea. Galloping is fancy chugging if you ask me, but what do I know.

“Pedalling” as I know it is usually playing a sustained note underneath other stuff. For example Metallica - My Friend of Mysery is doing this, playing the open A underneath the other notes.

The music basically is build around a Pedal point - Wikipedia

Thanks.
I think Iron Maiden does something similar in „Wasted Years“, where they play the lick over an E…!?
