Put this on the GAS list @Barney
Meanwhile, @sundog, somewhere in a cheap hotel with just a bass and an iPhone:

Last week was a cheap, crappy hotel that actually called itself a “spa hotel”. They lied, it was in the middle of an industrial park, overlooked by a petchem plant ![]()
The week before, the hotel was lovely. Right in the middle of Antwerp!
This week, I’m working from home ![]()
I also worked as a consultant for quite some time. Sometimes I had some very chic & expensive hotel, depending on the client (they pay more when you come in style).
Mostly it was mid range though, especially for longer projects.
But I remember clearly that one hotel, that had a 60s softcore porn vibe going on: large framed pics of very undressed young muscular men all over, lots of furry/plush stuff, red & orange colour schemes, leather, mirrors, neon and candlelight bulbs, wildly mixed. House music playing everywhere.
I just thought that this is one of those typical 90s underground-techno-weird things that you could find in some overhyped cities all over Europe.
But the loud and persistent noises at night (that I cannot not describe here cause of forum rules) made me rethink.
Only then it dawned on me what kind of hotel this is and what kind of “professionals” were staying there. They were clearly not in my business and also had very different love interests. Not many girls in that hotel, like: none ![]()
That was before booking.com, so I just selected a hotel within a certain price range, not far from my client, possibly using a phone book & selecting it cause of a cool name too.
I never went to that hotel again, but - in hindsight - it was one of the funniest experiences I had in hotels. Couldn’t tell my client about it though…
Also: it would be perfect for one of your cover videos, thinking of it ![]()
Yeah, almost! The half dressed boys are missing ![]()
I had to think of the uncensored version of the “Imagination” video clip by Belouis Some.
But of course, the hotel was much smaller, much cheaper … and you have to use your imagination to replace the girls with boys.
Similar vibe though…
Interview about that video, with Steve Blame from MTV. I partied a lot with Steve in the 90s, as he lived in Cologne … great guy. He would have loved my hotel ![]()
lol, that’s a good one!!!
My favorite is arriving at the “hotel” only to find a vending machine inside the elevator lobby. I found the email confirmation and then understood why it had a PIN code. The vending machine gave me an RFID “room” key from my PIN code. It was more like a storage facility with painted plywood walls than a hotel, but it did have a comfortable bed, decorations and heat in my chamber. That was an audio systems commissioning trip for a cruise ship under construction in Turku, Finland. It was quite the contrast after having been at the Shangri-La Hong Kong where they took it upon themselves to notice it was my birthday and left the most elaborate cake in my room for me.
Ah, the Meyer Werft?
I worked for AIDA (part of Carnival) and managed quite a few newbuilt- and refit-projects, being the product manager for onboard guest facing digital services (TV, signage, mobile).
The yard was always a war situation, very hard, very stressful - and I enjoyed it immensely and kind of miss it!
Nothing beats 20 hour work days, walking up and down an 18 deck ship (cause the elevators either don’t work or are full), sleeping on a half finished cruise ship and eating trash with Russian mafia contractors on meth ![]()
It’s Meyer now, but it wasn’t then when I was there.
Ah yesssss that’s it !!!,ship construction life. When the theater is done and ready ….. except for the metal grinding and welding fumes. It’s a special kind of challenge getting ships going. I agree. Grueling and satisfying.
We’ve just paid off the digital mixer and IEMs with our gig money so yeah ![]()
