yeah the Aubisque is the same model I have. it was the lowest model in the range, at the time. the color change depending on the year but it’s the same bike. (except for the parts I changed on mine, of course) also a lot of Peugeot bikes had this color scheme, including higher end models.
Ah cool. Interesting info.
Not sure what model mine was, but it was definately that colour, and the seat and handlebar wrapping was a cream colour, and the gears on the one in the pic, blus the crank etc, look identical.
Mine was huge - even bigger frame than the one in the pic.
As I said, I really loved it. It was a fantastic bike.
It belonged to a friends father and I paid £40 for it around 25 years ago.
I think it had a ‘Reynolds 501 Tubes’ decal on the frame somewhere.
yeah so it was a mid-range model. the 501 is the Reynolds entry-level tube set but it’s still a very good steel. not really made for performance but a nice mixe between comfort and reactivity. the higher end models were made with the Reynolds 531 tubeset which was more a race-oriented steel. Reynolds even made higher steels like the 753 (I had a Look frame in 753, very very rare ; sold it recently) but I don’t think Peugeot used these. The lower models like my Aubisque were not made in Reynolds steel, it was a cheap, heavy but very comfortable steel called HLE (or Carbolite, or 103 or older models).
Even more interesting info
Mine might have been 531. I just remember the 5 and the 1.
It definately wasn’t one of the 7** ones though.
What you said about the weight rings true as well - it wasn’t mega heavy, but it wasn’t featherlight either. Just a perfect bike for daily road use - I did ride on the roads back then.
I was so sad when it got written off.
the 753 tubeset is extremely rare, it’s almost impossible to have one. also it’s very light but very fragile. almost all the 753 frames are dead now.
the 501 makes a better daily bikes than the 531 which is truely a race tubeset. I would not be surprised if your bike were in 501. excellent tubeset for this use, and the Peugeot geometry were great for that too (less extreme than the italian geometry of the same era).
as we talk about bike tubesets : my Look KG 243 Team is made with the Columbus Neuron tubeset, which is probably my favorite tubeset ever. the 233/243/253 were the last Look steel frame models.
when I lived in Lyon, my daily was a 70’s Faggin italian frame with the Columbus Aelle tubeset, which is more or less equivalent to the Reynolds 501. it was a great bike ! full Campagnolo with a nice chrono-style configuration.
… speaking about Reynolds 501 frames, I just remember I have one ! … when I say I have way too much bikes …
it’s more precisely the 501 SL tubeset (a bit higher than the standard 501). full Shimano 600 (equivalent to the current Ultegra groupset), and a crazy compact geometry :
that makes perfect sense, and given that, mine was probably the 501 for the reasons you state.
I think I told you, I used to motorcycle down to the Bol d’Or 24 hour endurance race at Ricard throughout the 1980’s, and to me Lyon (on the ocassions I went that way) seemed to be the gateway to the South of France. As in, I’d ride down through northern and central France, but when one went through the tunnel de la Croix-Rousse, one came out the other side and suddenly found oneself in the South of France. It really seemed like that to me.
that’s funny now I live about 150 km in the south of Lyon, and I’m moving about 300 km in the north
where are you moving to terb?
Handy for Magny Cours eh!
Nevers?
Chateau Chinon?
I move to a small village but it’s roughly in the middle between Nevers and Chateau Chinon
It looks like a nice area. Not built up, and with some sort of National Park (Parc Nacional?) on the east side of the region by Chateau Chinon.
It looks that way on the map anyway.
yeah “parc national du Morvan”, I will be pretty close. like, it will be totally possible to take a bike and go ride directly in the parc
it looks like a nice place but I’m not sure it will be as cool as where I live now. just to give an idea, here is a picture I took a few days ago, the last time I put the trash out :
also I fear the weather to be much more cold, we’ll see …
That looks just great!
and you also have an Airstream?
Yes. That is my home.
Wild.
You don’t have much ‘stuff’ then?
