Not sure an iPad will make a good pickguard 
However, as quoted in the article, there are already guitars using tactile MIDI controllers on the body as used by Matt Bellamy of Muse for instance.

Chris Wolstenholme glues tablets to his Status Graphite too. Muse is all about the controllers.

Hideki Aoyama has an ipad as part of his drum kit for Babymetal. No one is entirely sure what he does with it but it’s not just for guitars. It’s by the high-hat
Just what we need, guitars that start getting laggy as they get older and are obsolete every 4 or 5 years. I don’t even want touch screens in my car… the more consumer electronic stuff you start stuffing in products, the more expensive they are and the harder they are to repair.
