fender custom shop, yes
If by that you mean âdragged a few miles behind a foul-smelling pickup down a rutted gravel road,â then, yeah. Pretty much.
no kink shaming
I canât wait for that fad to die out and then watch a bunch of people refinish their dubious buying choices
old beat up basses are cool. buy one if you like that look, thereâs plenty out there.
Yep. Or beat it up yourself over time, make it yours. Nothing wrong with the look itself.
But itâs still going to be hilarious when people that bought in to the fad start wondering why they thought a corroded bridge was a good idea.
The whole poser aspect of buying a new/beat-up instrument is eternally baffling.
ikr? ummm relic-d isnât ⌠relicâd.
btw it stands to reason that there are people here who own and love these instruments so I would remind everyone that Iâm an asshole that loves bongos. so you do you boo, no shame. well maybe a little
Iâve never really been a relic guy, but also not one to kink shame. Live and let live, ya know? That said, I recently bought a relicâd bass, second hand. I saved a ton of money vs. buying it new. Feels, plays, sounds exactly the same. Zero regrets. I certainly wouldnât pay extra for it though.
No shaming, just bafflement.
Everyoneâs free to live his/her best bass life. Mine might not be theirs and theirs might not be mine. Itâs all good, though, âcause we very likely wonât be subjected to each otherâs basses.
Pre-relicâd is a 100% poser look. Either its been played for long enough to actually be a relic, or its not. Play your instrument hard for a year, and itâll be relicâd.
Iâm not a fan of the relicâing thing for one reason. Iâm trying to find a cheap squier or fender body for a p bass build. Seems like beat up old bodies are being repurposed as relicâed and cost seems to increase accordinglyâŚ
That is one bad relic. I donât mind relics, but at least put some effort in
The red oneâŚwoood
Not with a modern polyurethane finish it wonât.
Thatâs why you can find numerous clean 80s basses on Reverb that would look completely different if theyâd have been sprayed with a nitro finish.
The industry moved away from nitro because itâs a huge pia to work with. Itâs safer for the employees etc.
But a poly bass wonât wear the same as a nitro bass. I can play my P Bass for the next 20 years and unless I drop it then the body will look pretty much the same as when I bought it.
I donât mind the relic thing either way. If you like it and it brings you joy. Great.
I donât get Jazz or Jaco either but hey ho.
Itâs funny. I look at brand new ârelicsâ and I often think
âOk, if this was real, actually worn from use, HOW would it have worn like that?â
What possible thing could have done it? Dragging it by the headstock along a rocky beach for miles? Wearing sandpaper shirts when you played? Being trapped under a huge, hairy, shirtless beer gut? Some weird guitar kink I never want to know more about?"
Can confirm. My main bass was made in 1986 and looks brand new other than I really need to polish the frets and tuners.
