Sustain is one of those things where you donât need more until you do. I have 2, 5 string basses with heavy bridges, one is string through body; all my 4 strings are light bridges. Most of the time i really donât care but there are a few songs i play where a note sustains over several bars and i sometimes wish i had a bit more sustain. Is it nice to have more sustain for those songs? Yes. Does it matter that much? No. Does it matter the vast majority of the time? No.
People can circlejerk and measurebate about whatever they like, i donât care⌠i just ignore it the vast majority of the time unless it entertains me. It all comes down to what you think is significant and you canât tell other people what that is for them. If people want to argue about silly things, let them argue.
Personally, i think itâs more important to eat good parmesan cheese than it is to have more sustain
Itâs funny that you rarely see people discuss the effect that metal pick guards can have on tone vs plastic, which can actually be quite significant
Are you sure you want to know? Some things are better left unknown
Itâs more of a guitar thing since it affects top end and probably doesnât have that much of an effect on basses⌠Aluminum is paramagnetic so it influences the magnetic field of the pickups/strings which has the effect of rolling off the top end. Sometimes thatâs good, other times itâs bad.
This brings up a question - there are social media influencers all over the place, so why are their not subversives in specialty forums planting seeds of capitalistic wants throughout these threadsâŚor are there?
In the US, around 40-50% of non-arranged marriages end in divorce. The divorce rate in arranged marriages is considerably lower and depends mostly on the type of arrangement, but the percentage of divorce is usually below 10%.
A lot of the arranged marriages are South Asian, and divorce is not acceptable culturally. I think thereâs other factors involved with that divorce rate. Iâve known some terribly happy arranged couples, and some terribly unhappy ones. I went to lunch with some Indian friends once, and elections came up, and the girls were hoping to be married soon so they wouldnât have to think or have an opinion on politics. These were women who were DBAs and developers. Completely different society and hard to compare.
I work with a lot of older Indians who are divorced. Many of the younger ones donât believe in arranged marriages. Iâm sure in India the old traditions still hold, but here they are dying.
One.
The in crease wonât necessarily be noticeable till you switch to another bass or setup that has less sustain then youâll notice the lack of it. Itâs not the high mass bridge but how the bridge is designed especially where the strings break, or not break. A saddle less RayRoss saddleless bridge is pretty awesome and the natural sustain is pretty insane but you get the byproducts of it as well itâs more chimney @John_E had chimed in a few times on this despite the PIA adjustment, lol. Through body string doesnât necessarily increase sustain because the tension is much higher the feel of the note is different.
Two.
Many factors determine or contribute to sustaining notes strings, gauge, neckthrough design, etc. You can have the most sustained bridge but if your strings are old or flats or coated it wonât sustain as well as a crisp clean Optima gold strings on a stock stamp bridge.
Three.
If you need extreme sustain you can easily get it from a pedal or plugins. In a rare instance that you need one continuous ringing that would be much easier to do than years of practicing.
Iâm in the middle of refreshing a song which demands a lot of sustaining note so far thatâs not the issue with any of my couple basses.
