The unsustainable sustain claim. Why doesn't it get hammered flat?

:100:  :joy:

Can you be more specific? Looking back through this it seems most of us were having a good laugh rolling with it.

Ask the op

So… you don’t have a specific example, then?

It seemed like a pretty broad swipe you were taking there, so I was curious where it was intended. In general, the only deleted posts I noticed above were not from the OP. However it’s possible that’s not correct as there appear to be two deleted posts.

There was dissent within the first four posts. If you didn’t see that, then you should go reread it. If you did see it, you’re being disingenuous, and proving my point.

Would you like to go reread it?

No, I have. Again, it looks like two posts were deleted, and at minimum one of them was not from the OP. Furthermore, a number of people were broadly agreeing with the OP and others were pushing back. Remember, spirited discussion goes both ways.

One person seemed offended. I did not see anything offensive, now or then. Jƶrg made a comment about online communication that was spot on. A few of people joked about being ā€œrudeā€ as presumably they didn’t see it either. Do you feel I am missing anything substantial there?

I feel that you are afraid of making a pejorative statement without a collective insinuation, again, proving my point.

Your statement is not proven, we disagree all the time and discuss all the time. Say ā€œtone woodā€ and see how fast it derails. We’re disagreeing in this thread, proving your statement wrong.

One should be able to discuss without making a pejorative statement however. I am prone to make them, so I try very hard to avoid making them. That’s myself, I don’t speak for others.

How so? For example, you were clearly being passive/aggressive with your post today and frankly I want to get to the root of it. If you don’t feel I am being confrontational enough, go somewhere else that will satisfy that for you.

I had one: NO engineers.

I did I said that to a Hofner bass once with flats, but then again why would I pick up a Hofner if I want more sustain in the song, :joy:

First off: it seems odd to re-open this thread with such a statement, which is like blowing air into dying embers instead of offering new insight that could add to the discussion.

So, looking back, the first four posts are three from the OP and one from me - so perhaps it was my post that caused you to re-open the thread with that statement?

What you call ā€œdissentā€, I would call ā€œdiscourseā€ and while one always could be more careful and weighed in choosing the right words and statements, I feel that - overall - my post was in the spirit of arguing some of the original points made, often by asking additional questions, which might help shed more light on the issue.

I do feel that I was going for the ā€œballā€ here and not the ā€œplayerā€ (and that, luckily, is the prevailing tone here in the forum).

We all have opinions, some of them strong opinions. We all have opinions that turn out to be based on false assumptions (or perhaps an idolization of a concept, a person, a belief). We all are human for sticking to opinions, sometimes in a strong fashion. But, many (if not most) of us are capable of ā€œcoming aroundā€ and learning from others’ experiences and insights.

This is, among other things, what makes this forum such a different place!!

(And, yes, sure, some opinions get re-iterated ad nauseam and sometimes we can’t stop beating a long since deceased horse, but, hey, that’s part of the price…)

@K_Miller if this statement is being made, you are entering thin ice. Been there - it’s time to unpack the peace pipe and go with the group dynamics.
Otherwise you’re in trouble

Well, at the time, you were being passive/aggressive as well, and deserved to be called out for it, much like above. In fact your behavior at the time is the whole reason the term ā€œthread turdsā€ now exists

As a reminder, it was the post sequence starting here:

Simple and direct communication is the best way to avoid misunderstanding and ill feelings online. This is why I tend to confront passive/aggression and indirect insinuation directly - it’s best to work these things out in the open. If someone has something to say, they should say it.

Additionally, I really respect @K_Miller’s post here:

I don’t agree with it (I think I have been being pretty consistently up front about this issue the whole time) but I respect him a lot for directly saying what he felt there.

Yes, and I have to thank you for learning so much about it and giving me the chance to repent

I became a better person! I wish I would be a better bass player too ^^

Totally this - I tried some rounds on my Hofner for a while and yes there was more sustain but it kind of lost its ā€œHofnernessā€ IMO. Beatles songs sounded awkward. So it was back with the flats

I think that ever time I see 0-60mph times for EV when almost nobody cares about that, they care about range and charging times

People spend the vast majority of their playing time trying to kill sustain  I play about 4 songs regularly that have a long sustained note where i wish for a bit more. Meh, who cares  if someone enjoys changing their bridge, tuners, pickups or believe that tonewood is a thing in solid bodies then i don’t care, they can enjoy their thing however they like.

This is like silly discussions that go on in photography that don’t affect 99.9% of the things that anyone ever does.

If you want to feel better, just spend some time on an acoustic guitar forum and you’ll leave knowing that electric bass players are significantly more sensible most of the time

I’ve not only spent tons of time on acoustic guitar forums, I ran one for years. It had the same vibe as this forum. Lots of good folks with common interests.
