Great vid by Paul DiBello on how to achieve different tones on a P-bass merely by changing the plucking hand technique:
Nice vid, thanks for sharing it. Though i’m a P Bass guy for the most part. the same plucking techniques can and are applied to almost any Bass so the title is off,
No pleasing everyone
But really what it shows is that the P-bass isn’t a one trick pony.
Wasn’t a dig at you, just saying that the youtube video title isn’t quite apropos or I should say not limited to P Bass only. I have two P Basses and they are what I spend most my time playing…
No offense taken. I was just, dare I say it, joshing you.
And you are right, of course.
The true nature of a great compromise.
Everyone walks away from the table feeling equally screwed over.
Overall not so much about compromise and more to the topic at hand if someone really wanted to open can of worms or go down rabbit hole at least, one could argue the centrally located pickups on a P make the changing of the stumping/plucking/picking hand postion changes between neck. pickup and bridge more pronounced verses a Bass with two pickups (i.e a Jazz or dual humbucker Bass), though those often can be switched between and/or blended) …or how some dual humbuckers can impede slapping somewhat depending on how close the neck pickup is to the fretboard or more so popping but I digress!
I bought a P this week, really quite liking it … once I got used to the neck, which is very different from my other basses!!
Actually recorded a Mike Dirnt bass line on it this evening - the line was begging to be bashed out with a pick!
So true Duncan…. My first bass was an old Squire P that I purchased about 20 years ago and just couldn’t get use to playing it after playing guitar since I was a kid…. Because it just didn’t feel right, I started B2B with a Yamaha and then moved to an Ibanez for awhile until I got through the course. As a “graduation” gift, my wife bought me a MIM Fender P. Took a little while to get use to that “Clunky” neck after playing those thinner Yamaha’s and Ibanez basses, but once I got use to it,…. damn!!! And the ability to mod that thing is endless!!
I’ve installed all the electronics and pup’s/tuners that I pulled from that MIM P bass when I upgraded it, and installed it all in that old original Squire P bass. I have played that “cheap heap” on stage many times and it has never let me down…. Not to mention that all the upgrades I made to it didn’t cost me a dime…
