Thumb Rest

So, I have seen on some vintage basses the thumb rest located below the strings. What’s the deal wit dat?

That’s the traditional position based on how the very first Precision Basses were designed and built. Before fingerstyle playing became more popular bassist often used their thumb or a thumb pick. I did back in the '60s before switching to fingerstyle. The tug bar was meant as an anchor point for the fingers.
