Too early for songs or no?

Being that I am only on module 4, is it wise to try and play some stuff on my own? Easy stuff based on tabs; Runnin with The Devil and the like. Seems tabs aren’t exactly accurate but, that’s fine with me just looking to have some fun.

Thanks!

Of course - never too early to have fun and put your skills to use. Just don’t be too hard on yourself if it’s harder than you thought, or doesn’t sound “perfect”. And try to reinforce the things you’ve learned in the process - try not to form bad habits. Take time for learning, and take time to have fun! Good luck - enjoy!

Never too early to “play”. The entire point is to play songs. Go for it.

I just played and had a big smile like a fool even when I played wrong notes, still do,

The more you play… the better you get  And the more fun you have!

Somewhere along the way (it may have been in a reply to a comment on a lesson video),
Josh says that module 4 was about the time the first level of songs in the 50 songs pack would fit in.

So yeah, you’re in a good place to start trying some songs.

If you’re comfortable going forward then do it just don’t overlook continuing to work through the fundamentals of timing and technique is all. Those are things I still do even after 50+ years of playing. That stuff is all there to keep you honest.

As others have said, go for it!

The first song I played through to the end was a U2 one, I think it was I still haven’t found what I’m looking for, fairly early on in B2B. I videoed my performance, phone propped up on a chest of draws, and I sucked!!

It didn’t matter though, I’d played a whole song! I think the next one was House of the Rising Sun’, again sucked, but who cares? I was having fun and I was progressing.

Play songs, embrace the suck and have fun!!

Awesome, thanks everyone! Continuing with the course is still #1 . I’ll have no problem embracing the suck for sure

Hello @Rob5589 ,

I have a slightly different idea/take but I am not saying no.

When I was in the early stages of Bass Buzz back in 2020 , I was learning “songs” for the wrong reason. Me personally , I tried learning songs because I was bored. All I was really achieving was simple riffs and fooling myself that I was actually learning songs. Meaning , just because I learned the riff , was no where near ready to “play” in a band.

As you progress through the Beginner To BADA$$ , you will , I promise , you will discover just how easy learning riffs will become. I only mention this because we found that our “favorite” song is just a C minor pentatonic. Knowing these scale patterns will create those lightbulb moments in time and you will be like " I can so play that!" Sunshine of your love is the best example here and it is NOT in the Key of C. When I learned that riff , I watched to see what fret via tab comes next. Once Josh Man announced that it was just a pentatonic scale , takes seconds to play. Another brilliant example is somewhere over the rainbow. Learning that one by TABS takes forever but knowing the scale , pennies I tell ya. Pennies

So again , I am not telling you to pass on learning songs this early in the game because that would make me a happy hypocrite. What I am asking is this:

  1. why that particular song?
  2. the riff or the song?
  3. are you learning this for the sound or to play with a track/band?
  4. do you currently understand song structure?
  5. once you know the riff , what are you going to do with it?

When I started bass buzz , I guarantee that I would have been a deer in headlights to these questions above. But reflecting back on my own journey , focusing on each Mode would have been the ideal path for me anyway. I say that because I wasted a lot of learning / studying time by noodling around because I thought that it sounded cool. Feel free to ask my neighbors.

So in closing , if you desire , play those riff but ask yourself questions along the way. Is there a scale here in this riff? Does this riff drive the band or just merry with the kick drum? Do other interments breathe between the notes of this song you wanna play? Is this a baseline or a synthesized keyboard?

Keep Learning And Come In On The Bomb ,
Cheers
